Also, remind your child that you should be in the room when a doctor examines himher. Tell your child that if someone tries to touch hisher private parts, or forces your child to touch their private parts, they need to get away from the situation immediately, and tell an adult they trust what has happened. Remind them that they might need to tell more than one person, if the first person doesnt believe himher. Thank you for reviewing this important information with your child; and remember, education is the key to safety. However, many of you may be interested to know that the abuse rate for children in Sanpete is at the national average, so we cannot simply sit back and think: it cant happen to my child, not here. Any and all forms of abuse are devastating for children, so please make sure your children know what physical, mental, and verbal abuse are, and that they need to let someone know if they are being abused. The other form of abuse that is very important for children to know how to handle is sexual abuse. Please run over the following information and guidelines with your child: Tell your child that the private parts of the body are the parts cov Nikki Peterson Helping your child Succeed school in by Lily Eskelsen, president Utah Education Association Were big people. Tell me about your new friend. There are so many ways to say what were trying to say. Its not hard to find the words. There are so many words to choose from. And we choose them all, but they still dont understand. Tie your shoelaces. Thats wrong. Thats right. That hurts. Wear a hat. Do your homework. No. Yes. Ill talk to your teacher and see what he says. Be home by 9:00. Why dont you bring your friends over? You broke it. You er Im sorry. O.K. Maybe were being too subtle. May be we're expecting too much. But if theyd just listen, theyd hear it. You look tired. You look worried. You look happy. Let's talk. Use a napkin. Keep your hands to yourself. Put on your scat belt. Do you need anything? Of course, Ill be at your 4th grade square dance. I need you. Yes, maybe we're too subtle. And so they miss the message behind all those words we say to them. All those words spoken in the secret language of parents. A secret we keep, always searching for just the right way to say it. For the best way to say it. Why don't they hear, I love you. Say bought it. A deaf man could hear what we mean behind those words. Chores first. Read your report to me. Take a bath - yes, again this month. Make up your bed. You wash. Ill dry. But somehow they miss it. I can tell Im not getting through. They dont hear what Im really -- saying. Because its dangerous. Because it matters to me. Because I said so. We practice saying those Sanpete County has chosen Gunnisons All That Jazz as its band to perform for the Utah statehood centennial celebration. This stage band musical group came together for the first time a little over a year ago. Most members of the band had been community volunteers in the orchestra that performed last year as part of the high school musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. According to Jan Christensen, It seemed a shame to just put our instruments back in the closet again after we had so much fun playing together for the school musical. So, some Dixieland music was purchased and, just for the fun of it, these community members continued to meet together several times each month to play their songs. It wasnt long after, that invitations were extended to perform a few numbers at last years old folks parties in both Centerfield and Gunnison. As time went on, more music was acquired and learned, and this year All That Jazz Media representative played the entire dances at each of the two towns old folks parties. Their repertoire includes a wide range of stage band numbers, including oldies such as Tiger Rag that dates all the way back to 1911, Glen Miller hits such as String of Pearls, Dixieland numbers, show tunes such as Tonight from Westside Story, and other popular songs. Members of the band include Angela Tomkins on B flat tenor and E flat alto saxophones, Ray Limb on B flat tenor saxophone and B flat clarinet, Paul Caldwell on trombone, Kay C. Caldwell on drums. Gene Wagstaff on bass, Bastian Bevan and Jan Christensen on trumpets, and Ruth Christensen on keyboards. In addition to their annual performances at the old folks parties, All That Jazz has performed at the Gunnison Fourth of July celebration and for several other special occasions. Watch for this group of Gunnison Valley musicians in the future and especially during the Utah statehood centennial celebration activities.
