Show matters in san pete county G 8 L citey CITY july by 1839 EDITOR DESERET NEWS DEAR SIR having recently made a tour through the southern settlements aa as far as mantly manti in company with J D T mcallister I 1 thought perhaps eaps a brief account of our journey would not be uninteresting to the readers of the news we left this city on the of june ultimo and arrived at manti on the about 12 m we held meetings in in every bettie tettie settlement except mountainville Mountain ville and pondtown Pond town between salt lake and san pete counties on our outward trip when we arrived in san pete we proceeded direct to manti mantis the molt moat southern bouthern settlement in the county and on our return visited and held meetings 0 in in the several settlements in that county we found the saints generally prospering and enjoying the spirit of god although 11 there are some who profess to be saints that are a disgrace to their profession and to humanity such however did not lack for sart spro for they were thoroughly inspired by the tue spirit of alcohol ther there is 13 in most of the settlements we visited a tolerable fair prospect for a good harvest barvest ban han eat of grain although in some the crickets and 1 grasshoppers ra 11 1 hoppers have materially injured the crop mountainville Mountain ail ville ae santa quin and nephi have suffered the most from those intruders the wheat in san pete county about six thousand acres although late looks well and promised a good crop two new settlements have been formed in in san pete county this season one about twenty five miles east of north from manti on an pleasant creeks creel called I 1 believe mt aft pleasant they have about one thousand acres of wheat wheal growing there is vicinity an abundance of wood water stone and timber in fact every facility for an extensive settlement the people we were re living in in wagons and brush shanties but had commenced a stone wall four feet thick at the bottom which when completed ia is designed to be twelve feet high and two feet thick at the top and to enclose bix gix acres 0 01 ground to be finished by the dinst within that enclosure they purpose building their houses and when that thai is done I 1 think their families will be secure from indian depredations the other new set bet settlement tl lement ement ilea liea about ten miles south of west from mt pleasant near the San pitch river OR oli the direct route from salt creek to mantly manti and is 13 called moroni they have sown about three hundred acres of wheat they have also laid ofra off a city and are building on their city lots instead of in the facilities there are abundant for a large settlement after visiting those hose settlements and transacting our business busl busi rens reis with the bishops w st artill started for forborne home where we arrived on the ad dinst I 1 would say aay in conclusion that although the me prospect bids fair for a good harvest the people have hava need to preserve their grain and not dispose of it for a mere nominal sun gun as some have heretofore done and those who will obey this counsel will see the day when they will lii ill thank god for having done BO so famine and the sword will desolate the earth arid and that event is nearer at hand than many are aware of oh ob that the would be wise in haste baste I 1 am your servant and friend J W CUMMINGS CuM MiNca minga |
