Show JENS JENS N CLOSES LONG AND USEFUL chheth funeral for well known pioneer and patriarch to be held sunday funeral services will be held sunday at 2 p m in the elsinore ward chapel for jens iver jensen 89 patriarch and well known pioneer of richfield and elsinore who died at his home in elsinore Elain wednesday patriarch jensen was bom august 8 1846 at ferslev jerslev Jer hjorting amt denmark a son of thos C jensen a brass moulder he learned his fathers trade and became an expert moulder and bell maker after graduating from the grade schools he was educated in theological subjects and was confirmed to the lutheran church in 1860 later he became acquainted with the mormon elders among them the late james M peterson who later baptized him a member of the L D S church his parents and brot brothers lers and sisters immigrated to america but he remained in as an L D S ati dim h her ei d dor yo two years on ma may belt left rii nahe he married inder al 01 J he had converted 7 L Y S church and on yeimei A aff cuple cuple left for america aiding arnew york july 4 1867 from new york they went to north platte nebraska and from there traveled across the plains to utah walking in much of the way and having their luggage hauled in wagons drawn by ox teams as did other pioneers in the party they arrived in salt lake city october 5 1867 and the following day had the pleasure of attending the first general conference of the L D S church held in the newly erected tabernacle they joined mr air jensens hensens Jen sens parents at fort ephraim and there mr jensen again took up his trade of making bells and castings for various uses later he took military training and stood guard during the last period of the indian war in 1868 he assisted in the work of building the union pacific railroad in echo canyon he paid his first visit to sevier valley in the fall of 1870 and on february 5 1871 moved to richfield where only 35 families resided at the time he helped reconstruct the richfield canal and after practically discontinuing practice of his trade to take up farming he joined other immigrants from frodden den mark in taking up land eight miles south of richfield on the richfield canal president joseph A young granted his request that the group be permitted to organize the town of elsinore in 1877 he assisted in establishing the ell cooperative mercantile institution ution of which he became superintendent erin crin and general manager in 1878 he was appointed post continued on page five |
