Show Minlch to shftre hla poetry Mav 30 Readers’ Series season ends Kristie Ellison arts and entertainment editor After its fifth successful year the CEU Readers' Series will end the 198990 season with a poetry reading from professor Jan Minich He will be in the Little Theatre at 8 pm Wednesday May 30 and admission as usual will be free Students as well as faculty and community members are encouraged to attend of the series this year Minich has been with Nancy Takacs and he has recently published a chapbook of his poetry entitled History of a Drowning At the reading Minich will share some of these works as well as some new poems according to Takacs The book includes poems written over the past ten years and most of them have already been published in periodicals across the country These include: Columbia Seattle Review Quarterly West Montana Review Northwest Review and Cafeteria Minich is currently working on a new manuscript of poems which will soon be a full length book called Above the Water Line After the reading an informal reception will be held in the ballroom where Minich will be selling copies of his new chapbook for about SS The CEU Readers' Series was the fust of its kind in the state of Utah and the continuing program has been copied at other colleges and universities One debut far the Readers' Series this season wu the successful benefit reading May 28 1990 with renowned poets G Baines and Kenneth Brews It wu held at the CEU Prehistoric Museum to raise money for the program Bames the literary arts coordinator for the Utah Aits Council spoke before he read his poetry on what insight and sensitivity it lakes lo spearhead a program like CEU's Readers' Series He commented that Takacs and Minich have had an innovative sense that hu kept the series in a progressive direction even when continuing support has sometimes been hud to come by Takacs and Minich have seen the Readers' Series develop and progress to include every genre of writing talent in its readings The series has sponsored such Richard Shelton William Stafford writing greats Sandra McPherson Robert Dana Steve Orien Terry McMillian and more recently Denise Low CEU's Readers' Serin is sponsored in part by an endowment Grom the Utah Arts Council ' If you would like more information call Takacs or 0 ext 329 or 290 Minich at u 637-212- Juried Student Art Show reflects best of 1990 class Thirteen College of Eastern Utah arts students won awards at the an- nual Student Art Show on display in Gallery East this month This is one of our better art shows because it wu the first time the art instructors juried By jury- able we are to show a higher ing it level of quality work by our stu- dents” Jama L Young CEU art in- structor said "Over 140 pieces were submitted we selected 86 that we felt but reflected the outstanding work of our students" he added "By jurying the annual show the sophomores are setting the pace for the freshmen to continue to create even a better show it next year" Students whose work Sculpture" Thayn's intaglio print titled “Black Lace" and Lonnie Be-hunin'i Mack and white photograph called "Captive" The $30 Bookstore awards went lo Shanna Brady's intaglio print called "Self Image" Elizabeth Dickes' oil painting called "Mugs" Gallery Eut is located in the main building on the CEU campus It win be open from 8:30 un until 5 pm Monday through Friday and mission is free The student show is the lut Gallery Eut exhibit in the 1989-9season and it will run through June 7 1990 ad-a- nd 0 wu pur- chased for the school's collection the highest honor awarded in the student show included Mary Thayn's monotype called "Fizz-ologKm Lynn Jensen's y" wa-terco- titled "Window View" and Benue Shampel's ceramic and fibre piece titled "Serpentwine" Three awards of merit went to Tracey Shook's crosshatch drawing titled "Still Life with Betty" Heather Young's relief sculpture titled "Prodigious" and James Lauritsen's monotype titled "Kim" Honorable mentions went to Jensen for her intaglio print titled "Self Image" Shari Ward's charcoal drawing tilled "Containers" Young's sculpture titled "Extended (v1 v C'f " J‘ I f i t'1 V On thiodate Brentball & On f241989U)S poafyito and Elder Todd Ray Wilson Wellington Wort gunned down by torrorts as they returned to first telegraph £ in 1 935-Tb- o S3ftiflht first major league baseball game played at ? took place IftCJndnnaliaa the Reds beat the'f |
