Show union veterans down at louisville DOC WATCHES TONIGHT the veterans in aid of louisville ky sept 9 special louisville has opened wide her arms to welcome the men that wore the blue the preliminaries of the twenty ninth annual encampment of the grand army of the republic were inaugurated augu rated today although the encampment proper will not be called to order until noon of thursday the veterans however are taking time by the forelock and for the last twenty four hours ending at noon today they have been pouring into the city on regular and special trains today the citizens are putting the finishing touches to the street decorations and the triumphal arches and by dusk both the residence and the business districts will present a beautiful appearance t different times during the week less than six national conventions convent ioni hilll be in passion pcs sion these comprise comp the national encampment of the grand army and the national seia ions relief corps ladies of the grand army national assoria tion of naval veterans national association daughters of veterans and national association of union ex prisoners of war in addition to aliese there will be a score or more of calip fires at some of which ex dent harrion governor mckinley ex speaker J warren keifer and other men of national reputation have promised to deliver addre seea the ubiquitous private Dalzel lof of ohio is early on the scene and is booming himself aa a candidate for commander in chief ample accommodations have been provided for those of the visiting veterans who for one cadee or another will not avail themselves of the facilities of the hotels boarding and lodging houses hundreds of tents have been stretched strat ched in each of the city park while alche city school houses and a number of halli and other meeting places have been cleared of their furniture and will be used for temporary sleeping quarters the largest camp is located on oak street nd consists of large hospital ante which have been loaned by the war department have been arranged in rows and the space intervening ter in each row haa beon variously designated aa lincoln grant and sherman streets strict military discipline will be enforced and guard duty will be done by U S re eulars twenty fiva hundred men had been assigned to that camp up to noon and remained far that number additional the posts quartered quarter sd here come from dozen cointa in michigan as well as from chicago philadelphia points in wisconsin and twenty cities in ohio and indiana commander in chief lawler and staff under escort of columbia post of chicago arrived here today on the headquarters headquarter a train were also mrs M K it wallace national president of the homana belief cores and the members of her staff both delegations were received by the reception committee and escorted to their headquarters at the gait house by a long procession of local pota there were also a large number of arrivals at the louisville hotel where most of the crack posts from the east will he quartered i the sentiment of the delegates to the encampment already on the ground seems to favor the selection of colonel I 1 N walker of indianapolis the nest commander in chief colonel walker was second vice commander from 1893 to 94 and would have been promoted to the highest office in the ift of the order at pittsburg last year hut for the unexpected fight that was made by the friends of colonel lawler of illinois and who carried everything before them so rit paul ia the only city beeking the honor of the next encampment camp ment and its delegation is already on the ground it is understood however that the delegation ia not prepared to give any definite as aurance as to how much the people of st paul are prepared to raise for the necessary purposes of the encampment there is considerable doubt moreover concerning the ability of that city to provide for any great number of visitors in fact it is conceded that from one half to two thirds of the total number that an encampment in the northwest north west might be expected to attract would be compelled to look to minneapolis for food and shelter and hence it has been suggested that if the next encampment goes to the northie t it shall be designated signa ted as the twin cities encampment camp ment there is no beet program for today beyond the reception of visiting posts but tonight doe watches will be held it the music hall national park phoenix hill and in new albany and across the river among the speakers will be ex president harrison general john B gordon henry watterson major william A warner and mrs john A logan |
