A BHUTaL Result of Terrible Typhoon and Tidal Wave Which Swept South Sea Islands. The steamer Mariposa has arrive! al San Francisco from Australia, bringinj additional news of the typhoon and tidal wave at the Pearl island roup in the middle of January. The French government has Investigated the disaster and found that between 500 and 600 islanders perished during the storm. After the wind had subsided and tha waters had receded, hundreds of drowned natives were found tied to tka trees about the places. Hikuera, one of the Ifalands visited by the deluge, was the best able to .withstand its force, as its highest place is twelve feet above the ocean. The residents flocked to the heights and sought safety by binding themselves to the rocks and trees. There they remained for three or four days in which the storm swept over the dreadful scene. Four hundred lives were lost there. The Islands of Hao, Morakau and Hikuera are virtually washed away, as they are at present iittle above the sea level and are destitute of vegetation. On them man can not subsist, as the soil has vanished and the cocoanut trees are dried up and dead. On the island of Raroria the devastation is complete. Three-fourth- s of the cocoanut trees were destroyed, houses were cast down, the walls of the Catholic church and the prison were swept away, and twelve of the inhabitants were killed. At Amanu there were three persons killed by the cyclone. Among the survivors of the awful storm are Elders Cheffield and Allen and Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert of the Latter-da- y Saints mission. , TWO MEN SLAIN WHILE SEATED AT DINNER TABLE. MANY TIMES A MURDERER. Herb Doctor of Philadelphia Accused of Killing Thirty-fou- r People. The police authorities of Philadelphia have directed the opening of thirty-four graves, having secured evidence which led to the belief that George Hossy, herb doctor, is responsible for at least many of the deaths. Hossey is In jail as an accessory to the murder of William G. Danze, whose widow is charged wtih having administered to her husband slow poison furnished by the negro. We do not know how many poisonings can be traced to Hossey, said a police official today, but thus far we have secured evidence that has warranted us in directing the opening of thirty-fou- r graves. This step will begin at once, and we believe the result will show that Assistant District Attorney Shoey was not exaggerating When he branded Hossey an arch-poisone- This case is assuming proportions far beyond the comprehension of those connected with it at the time Hossey was arrested. The real investigation is just bgeinning, and before it proceeds much further startling developments will crop up. There may be several arrests, but they are not likely to come until the organs of the bodies exhumed have been examined by the chemists. Detectives are searching for a white woman who is alleged to have represented Hossey in the preliminary dealings with hia patrons. OUR FOREST RESERVES. Over Four Million Acres of Land Withdrawn From Entry. A Washington dispatch of Monday last contains the following: The geological survey now has under consideration the establishment of forest reserves in the mountainous regions of the state of Utah. During the past three years petitions have been received from citizens of Utah for the establishment of small reserves which would protect their water supply for Irrigation and domestic uses. These proposed reserves are as follows: The Lagoon, Salt Lake, Spanish Fork, Tooele, Huntington, Manti, Ferron, Gunnison, Salina, Aquarius, Monticello, Sevier, Panguiteh lake. Duck lake and Calder forest reserves. an examination which Pending would fix the boundaries of these areas most desirable for forest reserve purposes and eliminate such areas as are most suited for agriculture or grazing, the secretary of the interior acted upon these petitions, and withdrew from entry about 4,608,000 acres. A careful examination was made during the season of 1902, and the secretary has decided to establish a system of forest reserves In Utah. Victim of Pueblo Thugs Dead. C. E. Bishop, the second of the two citizens shot by robbers in Louisteaus cafe In Pueblo, Colo., is dead. He was a draughtsman at the steel works, had a wife In St. Louis and his relatives reside in Arizona. The "body of Dr. J. H. Turner, who was shot and killed at the table where he was dining, was taken east Monday. It is now thought there were three of the robbers instead of only two, as supposed last night, but one stood on the outsiJe of the restaurant. The police are worki ing on a number of clews. A Montana Murder Case. Martin Zeitmer, who is being held on the charge of having killed George Relder, a wealthy rancher at Trail creek two years ago, and Jack Held and Andy Weidenbaar, charged with being accessories, have entered their pleas in the district court at Livingston, Mont. They all pleaded not guilty. The court fixed the bonds of Held and Weidenbaar at $3,000 each and refused bail for Zeitmer, the principal. The trial of the cases against he accused will be set for some time In April. Swallowed the Dolls Eye. The little daughter of Ezra Sovern, while at a party at Jackson station, ind., accidentally swallowed the big glass eye of a doll. Much speculation was Indulged in as to the best method of relieving the little one, and finally Grandma Sovern hit upon the correct procedure. She made some rivels, a food similar to noodles, cooked them In milk, and gave the child all she could eat. The food being solid and rather tough, picked up and embedded the piece of glass, and the childs life was saved.
