s put into the hearts hearth of my children the same love for God that he has put into my heart would that every father in Israel could cOU d say as much for his children I regret to say that there are some of the chit chil children dren of or Saints who have not been reared in the tho proper love and fear of God The reason for this is that the parents love their children with a shallow and selfish affection and so Indulge their children that they put into their hands the Instruments of their destruction Some Saints have grown to possess po e s such unlimited confidence in their children that they do not believe they can do wrong The result is that they turn them loose morning noon and ana night These children attend all sorts of entertainments and amusements and ana associate with persons whom they do not understand and in some cases i am sorry to say eay y with persons whom they do not know At this time I would feel as though my life liCe had been a II failure if any of my children should throw off the allegiance to their father and their mother and should cease to follow their counsel and their teachings I want to sound a R note of warning to the Saints to guard carefully their children Every device and in ingenuity ingenuity n that cunning men can conceive is in operation to lead our children away from the truth and the faith in the gds pel pet They The are trying to reach the chil chit children children dren because forsooth they the can not reach their parents They are trying to attack our church through our children I 1 believe that it is ls a pretty well welt known fact that I am outspoken in all that I Isay Isay Isay say and I want to say to everyone in inthis Inthis Inthis this vast list congregation Mormon Jew and ana Gentile believer and unbeliever that I t would rather take my m children to the grave grae than to see one of them turn away from this thin gospel Marry Within Church I r want ant to say too that I would rather take my m children to the grave aye I would rather go myself than to take a wife outside of this new and everlasting ing in covenant I want to see a Latter day Saint man marry mam a Saint woman I want to see a Saint woman marry a Saint man manLet manLet manLet Let the Methodists marry marr Methodists let the Catholics marry Catholics let the Presbyterians marry Presbyterians and let us marry within our own church and then we will see which will come out the best Nothing would give me more grief than the knowledge that one of my boys had married an unbelieving girl or that one of my girls should marry marr a man who did not believe in the Church of Jesus Christ of Saints Sometimes Saints marry outside of their church and because of that they usually come to grief A good many of our people let their daughters come to this city unprotected It would be sorrowful pitiable Indeed to relate the consequences of much of this thing I have been suffering with a cold for several days past and my voice is not In a good condition and to speak at atlen length len th to you ou this morning would be a severe tax on my physical strength When Then I came before you ou I expected to speak to you of morality mora of love of God of obedience to his commandments of the strength of our faith of the pro propriety propriety and necessity ne of patronizing home industry If there is i one thing In which the Saints have hav failed signally it is in n the support of home Industry Years ago in this valley President Young established Industries nt Young was earnest in this work He saw the necessity of establishing es these industries In Salt Lak Lk in ill Weber county in Provo in Springville in Beaver and in Washington Wash Vash Washington ington county he established these Indus Industries Industries Industries tries Yet because of the lack of the support of the Saints each of these theM industries has haa gone g ne to the wall Die of NonSupport Each one of them the raising of cot cotton cotton cotton ton goods the manufacture of woolen products the manufacture of silk sUk has bas gone by the board because forsooth the cost coat of labor was a little higher here than in the east and the shoddy produced in the east was sold here a little cheaper I would to the Lord that we ve could produce in this valley vaney of the mountains everything we need both for food and raiment I have the honor and privilege e of wearing eRring a Ii suit made from the last laet piece of ot goods manufactured at Provo For forty years I have worn nothing else save Utah manufactured clothing I am not egotistical but I feel that my m appearance Is the equal of that of any of you who wear the eastern shoddy I dont know about the reasons for the suspension su of the business of the home production of woolen goods save that our people failed to ta support the busi bui business ness ne s Brother Smoot was engaged In the manufacture of woolen goods at Provo and he can give you the figures He Jie e is better at figures n ures than I am amMy amM amMy My M people it is suicidal for tor us to patronise patronize the people from abroad We Ve should develop the skill and intelligence of our children to make them of great gIat benefit to the instead of per permitting permitting them to seek fancy occupations In our church schools and in some of our state institutions we are developing the skill of our children along the lines of manual training Our children are being taught tau t to make wagons machinery and furniture of ot different kinds This is isa Isa Isa a splendid advancement and of vast benefit to the community but it does not go gt far enough There are occupations which I am sorry to say our children do not feel like following If It we want a mason we have to look for an Englishman or a aGerman aG aGerman German G because our children do not wish to lay bricks Too Many Enter Professions If we want a blacksmith we have |
