Show i By Supt. Lynn Haslem 5 Superintendent of Schools 0 From Womb to Tomb The present concept of Educational Ed-ucational Responsibility. Until just the last few years the Public School System Sys-tem has been charged with providing just basic education. educa-tion. In the early UJS. circumstance, cir-cumstance, this was interpreted inter-preted as primarily the em -phasis of the three R's with school attendance ending at about 6th to 8th grades. The program was soon expanded to Include the high school years of more in-depth instruction in-struction so the responsibility responsi-bility became a grade 1 to 12 experience. A few years ago the Kindergarten was added to become a K-12 program. Between that time and the present, other programs have been added and deleted (such as Pre-Schoolor Head-start Head-start Program which seems to be fading parents are best suited for the child at ages 3-4 anyway) until the present K-12 program (K-15 in California) is now expanded expand-ed to the lifelong learning concept. The Public School is now open by law to anyone in the regular day program from age 5 to 31. The Adult Education program supplements supple-ments the regular program and is available in our district dis-trict to anyone beyond age 18 who would still seek a high school diploma in regular reg-ular course work. The Community Com-munity School program is available in our district to all of any age and will sponsor spon-sor any class or activity which holds promise of improved im-proved opportunity or circumstance cir-cumstance for BeaverCoun-ty BeaverCoun-ty residents. One such example of a group using these services Is the Beaver County Senior Citizens Council. This group of respected elder citizens has been successfully active for several years in the Mil - . i student lunch program at cost $1.00 and then are afforded facility usage for instruction or socialization sociali-zation as desired by the group. This is an excellent mid-day activity for these good people. I would urge you who qualify to consider your involvement. Education is more than the three "R's". These skills must be kept paramount, but if life can be further enriched en-riched by other involvement in the facilities of the School District and by using the teaching talent purchased with your tax dollars, then ' that, too, is a legitimate responsibility. re-sponsibility. I welcome the concept Education: Womb to Tomb! ford area. The organization seems now in the last year or so to be rapidly coming into consequential activity also inMinersville and Beaver. Beav-er. Patrons from all three communities have been taking tak-ing classes in art, ceramics, shop, home skills, needlework, needle-work, and other areas of interest. Field trips of educational edu-cational and entertaining nature na-ture to various spots of interest in-terest in the area have been experienced. Cultural enrichment en-richment activities are becoming be-coming frequent such as viewing of the play "Charly" by Dixie College presented December 2nd at Milford. A new and fine program for the Senior Citizens now is the once weekly Lunch at School program at both Mil-ford Mil-ford and Beaver (I'm told that numbers exceeded 100 at Milford last week). In this program the participants are served a lunch following the |
