ByKathryn Arbuckel Staff Reporter For people who have lived abroad readjusting to life in the United States is often more difficult than the initial adjustment to a new country. Dr. M. Kay Evans discussed this topic at Wednesday's Brown Bagger entitled "Return to Reality." In 1986 Evans' architect husband, Pete, acquired a job with the airforce which took them to live in Weilerbach, Germany for three years. Although family and friends were opposed to their moving, Evans and her husband saw it as an adventure. They lived in a German hotel for two months during which time Evans became acquainted with the city while her husband was at work. Later they moved to a house in a small village, where they were accepted and greeted by the people there. Evans said, "I've never felt quite so safe." The only time she felt she was in danger was when she returned to Ogden for the birth of a grandchild, and was almost mugged in the Ogden City Mall. After six months Evans began teaching night classes for The University of Maryland, thus leaving her days free to explore the country. To add to the adventure of the time, they were able to travel to many different countries, including Morroco, Egypt and Scotland. - ' .' ' . . 4' , f ' -.; Evans didn't want to come home and found it a shocking "return to reality." Some of the difficulties encountered have been adjusting to the fast pace of life in the United States, increased social obligations and the lack of interest other people have shown in life outside this country. Evans said that these and other readjustment problems are common to those returning to life in the U.S. after an extended period away. Neuenschwander (cont'd from page 2) in interpersonal relations when working with others, Neuenschwander said. Time management is also an important work quality. Managing time and work ethics will help greatly in a bid for a job, said Neuenschwander. Effective employees can be identified by their productivity, quality and innovation, he said. Attitude often affects productivity. Maintaining a good attitude at work and about work will improve productivity. By the year 2000, 90 percent of the jobs will be service related, said Neuenschwander. He said that IBM and Nordstroms are examples of excellent service-oriented companies who have built their . companies around this policy. To be a quality employee, service needs to be a priority, Neuenschwander said. Also, in the business world, "We expect you to be innovative," Neuenschwander said. Innovation is all around us. There is always a way to do better. Productivity, quality and innovation will show through if employees keep three things in mind, he said. First, they should become an expert by reading industry publications and through extra study. Then, they should be aware of what is expected and become a team player. "Ducks flying together are able to fly 72 percent further than one individual," he said. More can be accomplished by a team. Hoffman's deceit started to catch up with him when the Library of Congress did not buy his forgery of the Freeman's Oath for $1 million. Without the additional money, it became more difficult for him to close other deals, one in particular with the LDS Church which supposedly involved over 30 volumes of journals kept by William McClellan during early LDS Church history. Steve Christiansen was also tied into the deal, Sillotoc said. "In killing Steve Christiansen, Mark Hoffman was getting out of an impossible situation because he couldn't close that deal. He could have done something other than kill, but killing is what he chose to do," she said. When S illoloe was asked if she believed something like this could happen again, she responded "Yes, something like this could happen again because what Mark Hoffman did trades on what's human in all of us and what's vulnerable; and he does it so deliberately." "I don't think we've seen the last of Mark Hoffman," she concluded. Costal ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR and the finalists are Chris Davis Chris Davis is the Roy City Attorney.
