October 14, 1998 - Page 19 Adhesive developed for wounds Dermabond, a new topical adhesive recently approved for marketing by the FDA, can now be used to close millions of lacerations that otherwise would require sutures, staples or skin strips. Timpanogos Regional Hospital, a ColumbiaHCA facility, is now among the first Utah hospitals to offer this innovative approach to skin skin r ' f nil : n closure. In many cases, Dermabond offers greater patient comfort by eliminating the need for an anesthetic injection and is significantly faster than closing wounds by traditional meth ods. The adhesive is applied in thin layers by light brushing strokes and sloughs off during healing, often eliminating the need for a return visit. As with any method or medication, Dermabond is applicable for only certain types of lacerations. "The appropriate method for closing the wound should be left to the discretion of the attending physician," Ron Barlow, MD, says Emergency Room physician. However, Dermabond offers distinct advantages in some cases shorter treatment time, easier application and less patient discomfort.
