Events slated to mark Nat'l Trails Week June The first National Trails Day took place in 1993 to commemorate By BRIAN BRINKERHOFF Outdoors Correspondent the 25th anniversary of the National Trails System Act. Whether you hike or mountain bike, ride horses, ATVs, or snowmobiles, one annual event is scheduled just for you. To celebrate those trails and improve them for others, trail groups, outdoor businesses, individuals, and public land management agencies, from across the country, will celebrate the nation's vast trail network on National Trails Day, scheduled June 7, 1997. National Trails Day was established to promote new strategies for community trail planning, increase public awareness, promote trail conservation, and celebrate the values and benefits of America's treasured pathways. Governor Michael O. Leavitt has declared Utah Trails Week from June 7 through June 14, to correlate with National Trails Day. Knudson continued, "Since 1993, National Trails Day has become America's largest celebration in the outdoors." The unifying concept behind National Trails Day, according to Knudson, is to establish Trails for all Americans,' which hopes to establish a nationwide system of trails, linking old and new pathways and bringing trail access within 15 minutes of the home or workplace of every American. Knudson concluded, "People are encouraged to get out on Utah's trails during the week. It will be a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors with family and friends." Many activities have been scheduled for National Trails Day, including trail cleanups, trail signing, and recreational John Knudson, State Trails Program Coordinator, with Utah State Parks and Recreation, reported, "Utah Trails Week and National Trails Day festivities throughout Utah will include dedications of new trails, educational exhibits, trail rides and hikes, and trail maintenance activities." opportunities. Provided are a few of the scheduled activities. Unless indicated otherwise, all activities take place on June 7.
