That means that grease sticks to it very easily. This has some advantages but obviously, a major disadvantage, too.. When diamonds are found imbedded in the ground, they are usually stuck in solid rock that must be crushed to free the diamond's. (Although this may seem out of place the recovery of diamonds is geared to smaller stones rather than large ones). The rock actually goes through a series of rollers and sieves that alternately crush and sort it. After having been broken down sufficiently, the small pieces are fed across a table laden with grease - a type of petroleum jelly. Diamonds readily adhere to the grease and stick to the table - the worthless host rock is washed off. Although more modern methods are more frequently used, it is apparent that grease and diamonds are attracted. ' Unfortunately, this magnetism occurs every time you put your hands in dishwater, or even wash your face after applying cold cream. The grease in the water or even the oil in body and bath soap, will adhere to a diamond on your hand. Skin oil has a similar attraction. And the likes of grease and oil films on other substances, they can only be removed with certain cleaning solvents. When a diamond has even a thin film of grease on it, it looses a great percentage of its brilliance. The windows and mirrors on the diamond are the same as those in a home - the reflections are distorted and the appearance is cloudy.
