Dick Smith, a proponent of Dean Lott's move to place an initiative relating to growth limitation on the November ballot, said that the organizers obtained nearly 900 signatures, well above the 693 necessary to qualify. City and county officials, however, combed through the list to determine if all of the signatures were valid. Of the 889 signatures, 27 individuals were found to live outside of the Lehi city limits, 25 had signed the petition twice, and two were illegible. But what surprised Smith the most was that 151 were from individuals who assumed they were bona fide registered voters, but were not. In the end, the move fell nine signatures short of qualifying for the referendum. "What really came out of this for me is that there are 150 people in Lehi that would go to the polls in November and not be registered," said Smith, who intends to help correct that situation.
