Center S 2 SUSC STUDENTS ONLY .6. .'.'V Spring proper learning As this is mv first column, I considered taking on a truly provocative topic like Velcro or PE 101, but Ive confined myself to the mundane why SUSC should use the $10 fee increase to improve our current library rather than build a mini mall and ballroom. I know the issue has, for all practical purposes been settled, but dammit some one should say something, so here goes. I wont bore you with the pros and cons of to mall or not to mall; I wont even waste the ink telling you how very little we even need a ballroom (even though I personally think the formal dance has gone the way of the Edsel and the dinosaur). I wont even mention the institutional councils adoption of a supposed student proposal before the students themselves officially approved the measure. (Well, OK, I said it, but I couldnt resist that one.) But I just feel so betrayed. As one of the unwitting dupes (nice word!) who supported the name change, I had this misplaced notion that now was the time. I just knew that we would rise above mediocrity and actually become the Educational Crown Jewel of Utah. Silly notion wasnt it? So although I dont really like the idea of Phase II, what I really find objectional is what were not going to do improve our library significantly. Cardinal John Henry Newman said that the primary function of a university is education, not instruction. Instruction is grounded in how to do a certain thing; how to manage a class of screaming first graders (without leaving noticeable bruises), how to avoid getting audited by the IRS, how to write a coherent essay (hah!); these are all examples of instruction. But education (now take a deep breath and put on your thinking caps) is what happens when a student takes the given information or experience, digests it and produces something uniquely his or her own. This idea of education is reponsible for all of those wretched (some one elses opinion not mine) general ed classes you have to take. This idea of education is designed to produce well rounded capable members of society. This idea of education is what being a university is supposed to be all about. And finally, this idea of education is what is is sorely lacking on this campus. Admittedly, SU is a great place for social education. One of my favorite administrators often says, "Dont let your schooling get in the way of your education. That phrase is his way of encouraging students to get involved with the intangibles of college life. I would be the first to applaud SUs advances in social education; small class sizes, available teachers, and the rise of fraternities and sororities have provided students on this campus with opportunities unheard of on larger campuses. Phase II of the student center will do nothing but enhance that area of our education. But we have a serious credibility gap because SUU will want to bill itself as Utahs Educational Crown Jewel, and I have yet to see the littleand note at the bottom of the brochures telling prospective students that the aforementioned education is purely social. Academic education involves the opportunity for individual students to make discoveries for themselves. Academic education involves research, study, an exchange of ideas, and conflicting viewpoints. Academic education involves a place where new ideas and thoughts can collide with the wisdom of the ages. On a real university campus recess of a quiet nook in that exchange often happens in the well-lthe library. Surrounded by voices from the past. At SU that exchange seldom happens surounded by voices (rather loud ones), the weight of the walls pressing in on you, and air so stale it tempts one to give OSHA a long over due call. $90,000 a year would go a long ways toward creating a more educational atmosphere in our library. Longer hours more staff, more books, breathable air, wow! what a dream. We have great students, wonderful professors, and community support that has few equals; its just too bad were content to settle for second-bes- t instruction. On June 1st, I will be very proud to graduate from Utahs Instructional Crown Jewel, but I will shed a few tears for those left behind; truly seeking an academic education.
