Show T 0 M ir S U N MARLS LP L TO THE LETTER OF JOS L PE TERSON OF DENMARK presbyterian preacher denies several of the accusations brought against him rev james thompson of the presbyterian beteri by terian 1 an church of this city has submitted the following reply to an article by joseph L I 1 peterson in which mr thompson Is censured for certain ideas alleged to have been pro mulga ed by him while lee lecturing turing in deamaral mr peterson is a missionary tor for th latter day saints church with head quarters at denmark his loiter letter avas was published in full by this pa per beveral days ago editor standard since my return from europe I 1 have found in tho the op 09 den standard of september 4 a a re port of joseph L Fi peterson eterson conference conter enci 1 president in aarhus denmark which in the interest of fair play I 1 beg to ariti cise somewhat I 1 will now take mr petersons report by paragraphs as indicated in quotation marks j i first mr peterson says that I 1 am A ft so called honorable citizen of ogden I 1 have not vilified nor blackened the name of utah second I 1 have not lectured unde the auspices of tho the indre mission the indre mission Alis sion Is one of the mos intelligent orders in its composition in denmark and is an integral part 0 the great lutheran church it I 1 havi said nothing unkind of utah as i state or of her american institutions in my talks on mormonism I 1 havo have salu sala nothing but what is written in standard mormon books and what I 1 kaev from personal knowledge third 1 I have nover never lectured in any nail fiall in denmark fearing thai or weber countes coun tys citizen were vere present as mr peterson intimates ateS on the contrary I 1 knew as well as he did that about seventy of missi missionaries oDaries would be at my meetings in the different cities I 1 have never said chatin that in the schools of 0 utah tho the children are arc taught that the only god we worship is father adam tho the adam god theory was wag developed apart from the schools fourth Fourt li I 1 never said that justice could not be nad aad in utah as all the ahe courts ware were controlled by the mor mons and all the judges were members of the church such a sweeping thought has never entered by mind I 1 have known gentile judges jai in this state for seventeen years when anything was said with reference to justice or the courts it was strictly in connection with polygamy I 1 hale ha e never spoken the name of the murderer peter in any address made in the kingdom of denmark nor has any thought in connection with his name or hit his wife or his execution entered my mind at any time during my tour in denmark the others too numerous to mention I 1 will now mention to you they were the doctrines and organization of the mormon church quoted precisely as stated in tho the books of that denomination word for word these were ever tho the burden of my lectures and my points were unanswerable from a mormon standpoint as I 1 simply taught 1 mormonism from authenticated mormon sources fifth in this paragraph 0 I 1 seo see that mr peterson gives me no credit for giving all the mormon friends present an opportunity to ask any questions they might desire this opportunity 1 I gave in every place I 1 answered every question put to me in a straightforward manner this I 1 could easily do as I 1 claim to understand mormonism after seventeen years study ot of the subject mr peterson says that I 1 was publicly called a liar by different parties well I 1 did not know that there was ze more than one party in the conference of which ho he Is the president that called merllar me allar a liar it maybe may be that he means that each of the six bi blanches anches is a party by itself so eo I 1 presume that mr peterson was numbered among tho the parties that called me a liar flar mr peterson possibly forgot for the time that when argument tailed failed him it was a weak argument to call a man a liar Nelt neither bor I 1 nor my friends pastors moller molle and munk refused to discuss from mormon books but on tho the contrary we insisted that the mormons must inest stand by their own books and he MT peterson insisted on taking the bible alone and through it tried to establish I 1 mormonism Alor monism this I 1 rejected on tho the grounds that the 1 mor mons have four bibles or books to constitute sti tilte Alor monism and these must be taken together otherwise the hearers would not bo be instructed in INI mormonism ormon I 1 in the fifth paragraph mr peter son bon remarks this Is not written in a spirit ot of bitterness and revenge I 1 will consent to the elimination of these two harsh words if instead of them you will allow mo me to insert the word desperation and to drop the word not so BO as to read this Is written in a spirit of desperation will express my opinion as to the real reason for sending the report if mr petersons report Is typical of tho the methods pursued by him in his missionary work then his record as conference president to IB une viable and it if he has the impudence to manufacture a report in order to slander me ue be Is capable of using any means to justify his hie ends and it is not to be wondered that he should get material for converts who are ready to shout liar and if need bo be to murder n u order to strengthen his cause that female of his hir membership who shouted d that I 1 should bo be killed on the spot Is exactly of that class lastly ur mr petersons Peterson 8 report of my lecture us as a whole isa Is a base fabrication void of all fairness and essential truthfulness signed JAMES THOMPSON presbyterian Mi minister ulster |
