Show convention ENDORSES DICK AND FORAKER difficult to give equal endorsement to roosevelt and the senators contest over state chairmanship dayton 0 sept 12 aln what haa been for years the off year in state elections the republicans of ohio today held one of the hottest conventions in the history of the party in this state and remarkable was it for the fact that tho contest was not over tho naming of candidates for the state offices for which the convention had boen caled but over the selection of a chairman of the state executive committee involving thi state leadership of united states senator dick the senator on not only on this proposition but also on the question of endorsement of his work and that of senator foraker in the united states senate many of the republicans public ans having bakeri the position that in view of the the senators had not entirely agreed with the policy of president roosevelt on national legislation it would be inconsistent to give an endorsement of equal force to both the president and tho two senators in obtaining a victory over congressman burton and harry M daugherty on these two questions senator dick retained his chieftainship and prestige but on the other hand the platform in which appeared tho merchant marin 0 and somo other planks indicated anat mr bur ton had not been idle directions on two points primary for united states senators and tariff revision one of the cleveand delegates introduced as a minority report these two apparently with ahn approval of mr bartoni Bur toni and the con bention defeated both one incident of the convention that almost escaped came immediately after senator dick had concluded hi speech thanking the convention for the vote just taken in his favor senator foraker had been occupying a seat just back of the chairman and he stepped to the front and called mr burton in the front the cleveland delegation to the edge of the platform for a talk the congressman came promptly and listened quietly as the senator asked him to smooth things over by moving to make the dick endorsement unanimous with a wave of his hand in protest and a vigorous shake of the head mr burton replied yot just now and the incident closed both men returning to their seats without many of the delegates having noticed the incident tonight congressman burton out the following statement of course I 1 had hoped for more successful results but so far as my own efforts are concerned no beginning was made until the end of last month while on the other side was an organization which had been former for many years and which by its varied ramifications is extremely powerful in state politics the movement will be continued for the essential principles for which I 1 have contended it is my desire to avoid factional differences feren ces as much as possible and also to oppose bossism and the alon of power in a few political leaders both oi which have become so marked in american politics in recent years 1 am confident that ich en tho next republican convention is held the popular mind will be more thoroughly awakened it will be my earnest effort as well as that of others with whose views I 1 coincide to secure needed reforms in state legislation and party management through the agency of the republican party I 1 can give cordial support to the ticket I 1 am very sure that mr thompson nominated for secretary of state has no affiliations which should prevent him from obtaining the fu republican vote and the same may be said of his associates on the ticket the platform is disappointing to many of us because it is not progress alve enough I 1 had hoped there would be a plank in favor of the nomination of united states senators by popular vote and favoring tariff revision but these will come in time |
