The Boys were holding forth on the usual subject: The Girls. Only this time, instead of discussing the latest object of hormonal hallucination, The Boys were exploring the other end of the social spectrum. one of The Boys Aggie! exclaimed. Todd and Aggie! A chorus of groans were aimed at Todd. He responded with a properly pained grimace. Then he quickly came up with a combination of his own: Danny and Darlene! Danny's exaggerated wince brought another round of raucous laughter. He looked around the group for a likely target and noticed Mike sitting quietly, almost distant from the circle of friends. "Mike, he announced, pausing significantly for effect, and Melody! The paining almost brought the house down. What could be more ridiculous? Mike was the most popular guy in the school. Melody was . . . well, the opposite. In fact, its surprising that The Boys even knew who she was. But they did at least enough to know that Dannys twosome was the ultimate mismatch, and they applauded his Then they waited for a response. "Melody, Mike repeated, nodding thoughtfully. Then he smiled. "I like it. I was trying to decide who to take to the dance this weekend. A recent study of teenagers in the Netherlands, gives parents one possible solution. Take your kids to church. According to the study, two powerful factors among adolescents church attendance and belief in God served as strong deterrents to the desire to use drugs. British researchers surveyed over 1.500 high school students in five different schools in the Netherlands to see if their religious beliefs and practices made a difference in their views on drugs. As a follow-uto a similar study in England, the students were asked whether or not it is wrong to either sniff glue, or use heroin or marijuana. They were also asked whether they believed in God and how often they attended church, if at all. The combination of belief in God and regular church attendance strongly influenced the students to view drug use as wrong, the researchers noted. Similar results were found in England. Religiosity is a significant predictor of attitudes towards the use of each of the substances included in the survey, wrote Kenneth Mullen of the University of Glasgow and Leslie Francis of Trinity College in Wales. Among students who both believed in God and attended church at least once a month, 84 percent believed using heroin was wrong compared to only 65 percent of students who did not believe in God and did not attend services a p I Christ of Mission Bountiful 45th 115 Ward. Although attending church just once a month may not seem like much, it is still a strong deterrent to adolescent drug use, noted David Larson, M.D., president of the National Institute for Healthcare Research (NIHR). Similar percentage differences persisted in views on sniffing glue and smoking marijuana. Some 83 percent of students who believed in God and attended services monthly or more felt sniffing glue was wrong, compared to 61 percent of students with no belief in God. Also, 78 percent of regular attending believers felt marijuana use was wrong, compared to 59 percent of those with no belief in God all striking differences. Religion still has a powerful correlation with the young persons attitudes toward drug use, the researchers stated. With such significant findings they hoped that future research in the drug field will, as a matter of routine, take more account of the influence of religion" in deterring drug use. After a few dances and more conversation they were downright concerned. When Mike and his date that couldn't possibly be Melody, could it? arrived, The Boys confronted him. Whats going on, Mike? Danny asked. "What are you going to do?" "Why?" Mike asked. Whats the problem? Theres no problem, Todd said. "Its just that . . . well, I don't want to "Look, Danny interrupted, "if you're going to make Darlene feel bad forget it. The rest of The Boys indicated concern for their dates, too. Mike laughed at his friends. "You dont mean to tell me that you guys have actually enjoyed yourselves tonight, do you? The Boys glanced at each other sheepishly except Danny, who was a little put off by Mike's attitude. Darn right I have, he said. Ive had a great time. Want to make something of it? Mike smiled at his friend and patted his shoulder. Nope, he said. "You already have. Now, if you guys will excuse me, I'd like to spend the rest of the evening with Melody." He turned and left his friends wondering. Was there really another plain or had he counted on a sudden outbreak of friendship all along? Only Mike knows. And like I said he isnt telling. think I'll ask Melody. The Boys went absolutely nuts. Mike had a reputation for being such a nice guy. Who wouldve thought hed come up with a practical joke like this? "What about it? Mike continued. "I'll ask Melody and the rest of you can ask other girls who never get asked out. Well make it a night theyll never forget! OK? agreed. Everyone Enthusiastically. "But if were going to pull this off weve got to do it right, Mike warned. "That means they cant suspect anything. So no joking around we play it straight. Got it? Sure, Todd said as everyone nodded. "Straight. But when do we pop the big gag? "Dont worry, Mike said. "Ill let you know. But youve got to take it seriously. Treat her special, like its going to be the greatest night of her life. Thats the only way itll work. Trust me. The Boys did trust him, so they did what he said. They asked girls from the bottom rung of the social ladder. They ordered corsages, arranged for dinner at a fancy restaurant and prepared for what promised to be an unforgettable evening. When the big night came The Boys picked up their dates who, I should mention, all looked good. Really good. Dinner flew by as they become better acquainted with their new friends.
