By TAD WALCH M WC tougher than t . the mighty PROVO Remember how confused BYU quarterback Kevin Feterik looked at times during his sophomore and junior seasons? He's made quite a leap as a senior in 1999. Even BYU's coaching staff has been surprised quite happily by the extent of his success through two games. "We've never had anyone who's been more in a zone than Kevin's been the last two games," head coach La Veil Edwards said this week. Let that sink in for a minute ... But for one season at least, the Cougars might get better competition ,among the Rocky Mountains than they HT. Should on the shores of the Pacific. How this came to be is a mystery. But after the first three weeks of college football, 1899 appears to be a 5 solid season for the MWC and a down year in the Pac-1- JLJj Pac-10- the picture. Edwards and Feterik have said the light just switches on for quarterbacks after they get a certain amount of experience. Which makes it interesting to see what an advantage the Cougars have over most of their opponents this year. Feterik had started 21 Division games entering this season. BYU's first eight opponents this year don't have a single quarterback who had started more than four games prior to 1999. In fact, you could add up all the prior starts by quarterbacks on those eight teams and not match Feterik's total of 21. So while computers and college football experts agree that No. 17 BYU is playing one of the nation's 25 toughest schedules, it's one of the softest in terms of facing experienced QBs. "I'm sure it's extremely tough," Feterik said when asked how hard it would be on these rookie quarterbacks to face a defense like BYU's. basi-'call- y ,-- r u AS USUAL, let's go to the num- bers for verification. There will be 65,000 screaming fans to deal with on national television." Ellis, whose three career starts have all come this month, is only the third in a line of seven consecutive rookies BYU faces to open the season. Some of the Cougars didn't consider Washington's Marques Tuiasosopo a rookie, though he'd started only three games in his first two seasons with the Huskies. Those three starts could also be discounted because the BYU game was Tuiasosopo's first game in a new offense under new coach Rick Neuheisel.
