OPENING TODAY DOUBLE JEOPARDY: 2 stars. Ashley Judd, falsely accused of killing her not even-deahusband, seeks revenge In this "Fugitive" npoff that even Tommy Lee Jones as the dog-face-d parole officer who pursues her. A lazy, ridiculous movie that just didn't feel like trying hard. R (attendant profanity, sex scene and related nudity, violence) EOS JAKOB THE LIAR: 2 stars. Robin Williams plays a Jew who teils cheerful lies to enliven his fellows dunng World War H. The film never says whether we should be laughing or crying, and is ambiguous on other points, too. More pathetic than dramatic. PG-1- 3 (profanity, scenes of death and torture) Knight Rlddar Newspapers MUMfORO: 2 stars. A smorgasbord of fine acting, except for the lead, Loren Dean, who is blank as a guy impersonating a psychiatrist in a small town. Intelligent, funny and likable, but it won't blow you away. PG-1(profanity) Knight Newspapers i2 ' CONTINUING 32 THE ASTRONAUT'S WIFE: 2 stars. An astronaut (Johnny Depp) ' returns from a traumatic space event and impregnates his wife (Charlize J Theron) with uriusuai twins. Good psy-- t chological thriller, if a little J Excellent cinematography and some cool J visual images heip fill the times when the story is dragging. R (abundant pro- vio fanity, one scene of strong ' fence, death images) EDSsexuality, AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME; 3 stars. Mike Myers e shines in this sequel to the 1997 spoof. His title character seems Jess outrageous now that we're used to him, but Dr. Evil (also played by Myers) is brilliantly funny. Several bits are genuinely clever, despite being scphomoric. Less sexual than the first one; far. far more crude and gioss, though. PG-1- 3 (language, partial nudity, abundant bathroom violike cartoon sexual innuendo, humor, EDS lence) BIG DADDY: 3 stars. A comedy that leaves you happier than when you walked in. Adam Sandler does a superb job of involving the audience and portraying a believable character. Dylan and Coie Sprouse steal the show as the foster child Sandler adopts to show his girlfriend how mature he is. PG-1- 3 (language, mild violence, homosexual kissing, vulgarity public urination, vom-- ' JO iting, etc.) THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT: 3 12 ; 'stars. We're told that three amateur film makers went into the Maryland woods to investigate an old legend of a witch. They never returned. The movie we're watching is the footage they left behind. Shot entirelv in 8 mm film and video, it and the has the look of a home movie viewer is right there along with the terrified characters. The final moments are dreadfuliy creepy and haunting. R (abunEDS dant, pervasive pro'anity) BLUE STREAK: 2 stars. For Martin Lawrence fans only, who will no doubt find his hyper-activ- e mugging and amusing. From an objective standitself the is a movie point, "buddy-cop- " film, and few of the gags are actually funny. Lawrence poses as a cop in order to retrieve a stolen diamond hidden in the depths of the police station; Luke Wilson is his bland partner. This movie is so inept, they even got the LAPD's motto wrong: It's "To Protect and Serve," not "To Protect and to Serve." PG-1- 3 (abundant minor profanity, drug references, action-relateviolence) .'SOS BOWFINGER: 3 stars. legends Steve Martin (wtio also scripted) and Eddie Murphy work together perfectly in this sunny, satirical story of a wannabe filmmaker (Martin) trying ' to film a Hollywood blockbuster without . its star (Murphy) knowing he's in it. in particular, demonstrates why '.Murphy, he was once great with his controlled, ' hysterical performances as action star Kit Ramsey and nerdy look-alik- e Jiff. Tinseltown was never mocked so lovingly. . PG-1- 3 (moderate profanity, sexual diasci-f- i EDS logue, violence) BROKEDOWN PALACE: 2 stars. Recent grads Alice (Ciaire Danes) and Darlene (Kate Beckinsale) are giggiy teens visiting Thailand, where they are framed as drug smugglers. The film, full of unfinished premises, can't decide if it's a tense political drama can lawyer Hank (Bill Pullman) prove or a gritty prison their innocence? drama. In the end, it's meant to show the meaning of true friendship and sacrifice, but those elements aren't established beforehand enough to make it work. PG-1- 3 (pretty heavy profanity, brief prison-relatenudity, drug use, rruld vioEDS lence) CHILL FACTOR: 2 stars. Cuba Gooding Jr. and Skeet Ulrich play regular guys who must keep a chemical weapon below 50 degrees Fahrenheit lest it kill everyone; Colin Firth is the bad guy who wants to get it from them. Derivative of Gooding every other film in its genre and Ulrich don't like each other at first; bad guy is mad at government; dozens of "Oh, come onl" impossible stunts; with some fairly bad dialogue, to etc. boot Still, it's not bad as mindless escapism. R (heavy profanity, violence, EDS brief blood and gore) A DOG OF FLANDERS: 2 stars. Net so much a movie as it is a nag "Cheer up," "Be glad you're you" about a Belgian kid who wants to be an artist. Good acting gives it the texture and intelligence its script can't. PG (extremedeath scene) ly mild profanity, a close-u- p Knight Ridder Newspapers GORGEOUS: DEAD DROP 2 12 stars. Broad, lowbrow farce at the Mmnesotans and expense of small-towa locai beauty pageant that inspires jealousy and murder. It would iike to be "Waiting for Guffman," and while it doesn't measure up to that movie's genius, it does provide some solid laughs. It's the "offend everybody" school of thought, though not as skillfully done as in some movies. Still, if you let yourself, you'll laugh and laugh. PG-1(comic violence, sexual innuendo, EDS profanity, vulgarity) DUDLEY 1 star. A stupefy ingly bad script, not helped by the broad acting. Brendan Fraser is the t, Canadian mountie Dudley out to rescue Nell (Sarah Jessica Parker, giving the only good performance in the movie) from the evil Snidely Whiplash. Heavily diluted, and lacks any of the charm or wit of the '60s cartoon on viowhich it is based. PG (cartoon-sty- e lence) Knight Ridder Newspapers FOR LOVE OF THE GAME: 3 stars. Kevin Costner manages to save his career, displaying the charm that made us like him in the first place, in this film about a pitcher's big game and the reflections and flashbacks he experiences throughout it. The storytelling (directed by Sam Raimi) is great, though the film does get sluggish and is a bit over-lonAn emotionally triumphant feel(considerable profanitgood movie. PG-1- 3 EDS y, implied sex) THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER: 2 stars. 'The General's Daughter" is a big, lurid murder-myster- y movie about sexual sleaze in the U.S. Army. R (extreme sexual violence, profanity, violence, sex) Chicago Tribune THE HAUNTING: 2 12 stars. A ghost in for the story '90s, which the computer-animated scariness of a haunted house is the real star. Confusing plot with a thousand holes and bad dialogue almost ruin it, but not quite. The movie gets desperate at the end and suddenly starts killing off its characters. Not especially scary, but worth seeing as a diversion. PG-1- 3 (violence, mild sexual innuenEDS do, mild profanity) AN IDEAL HUSBAND: 3 12 stars. with a Replete dignified humor, brimming with lines dying to be quoted and a stoand cast that mingle exceptionably ryline well (Oscar Wilde mixed with Jeremy Northam, Rupert Everett, Minnie Driver, Julianne Moore and Cate Blanchett), it sets itself apart from the blockbuster-orienteperipheral films. A definite must-se- e PG-1- 3 for any serious movie-goe(very brief obscured nudity, and JO humor) INSPECTOR GADGET: 1 12 stars. A cartoon about a Maxwell Smart-lik- e hero (Matthew Broderick) whose body has been filled with all kinds of nifty gadgets. There are some funny moments, but with the endless product placement, lack of a plot and incredibly lightweight script, it's like watching a TV commercial. PG (mild violent Daffas Morning action, mild language) News LOVE STINKS: 0 stars. A thoroughly unenjoyable film, written and directed by Jeff Franklin (TV's "Full House") and full of stars, yet worse than any sitcom imaginable. Bridgette Wilson plays a omart in recant fiim history ... and NOT m a kind of way. The two or three laughs (small ones, at that) are not worth sitting through this mangled train wreck of a movie R (abundant EOS profanity, vulgarity, sex) THE MATRIX: 3 stars. Monochromatic Keanu Reeves is outperformed by the special effects in this futuristic thriller. He plays Neo, a computer wa who may be the Chosen One who can put a stop to the bad guvs who are keeping the entire world living in an electronic virtual reality. It's complicated, but not impossible, and no major loose ends go unresolved (as often happens with movies of this genre). There's actually some profundity hers, too, If you watch for it; even if you dont it's a fun ride. R (profanity, violence, intensity) f)S MICKEY BLUE EYES: 3 stars. This fish-ostory has Hugh Grant at his bumbling British finest wrapped up with his girlfriend's mobster father (James Cash) and having to act like he's part of the "Family." We've seen these ideas before, but in the hands of sparkling performt.s with a snappy screenplay behind them, they seem fresh and hysterically funny. PG-1- 3 (moderate language, mild violence, mud sexual EDS innuendo.) THE MUMMY: 2 stars. This "Indiana Jones" wannabe is exciting, but little else. Brendan Fraser makes for a decent action star as a guy who accidentally unleashes a centuries-ol- d mummy on an unsuspecting Egypt. Dialogue is peppered with every line from every other adventure movie ever made. Pa-1- 3 (mfd all relatively language, gore, suspense mild, though too intense for young kids) EDS THE MUSE: 2 stars. Albert Brooks plays his usual beieaguered-but-soft-spo-ke- n shlub, this time as a Hollywood screenwriter who gains inspiration from a "muse" (Sharon Stone) who also causes him no end of trouble. Cute and amusing, but rarely hilarious, and the Hollywood inside jokes may not reach everyone. Stone gives a great performance, though. PG-1- 3 (profanity, suggestive dialogue, brief partial nudity) EDS MYSTERY MEN: 2 12 stars. A clever skewing of the traditional superhero movie, with Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria and William H. Macy as wannabes with dubious powers who must rescue Champion City's real superhero (Greg Kinnear). A very good try at an amusing premise. PG-1- 3 (very miid profanity, vulgarity, comic book-styl- e violence, very brief EDS obscured partial nudity) NOTTING KILL JO OUTSIDE PROVIDENCE: 2 stars. The Farrelly Brothers ("Dumb and Dumber," "There's Something About Mary") keep the vulgarity out tone down the humor in this charming bit of 1374 boy nostalgia about a sex) (Shawn school. era will viewers Hatosy) sent to snooty prep Anyone who lived through that find ft affecting; even younger should be entranced by this very gentle comedydrama. R (abundant profanity, abundant drug-usvery brief partial nudity, and sexual diaEOS logue) RUNAWAY BRIDE: 3 stars. Julia Roberts is a small-tow- n gal who has left tnree men at the altar; Richard Gere is who follows her the reporter around, trying to get the real story behind her wedding-dajitters. Naturally, but they fall in love with each other only after a tumultuous, often hilarious, initial relationship. The supporting cast (including the great Joan Cusack) helps considerably with this film, which is e exactly like a thousand other films. charisma of performers is what PG ft makes (mild profanity, entertaining. EDS suggestive dialogue) IHE SIXTH SENSE: 4 stars. Bruce Willis's low-ke- y performance actually winds up subtle and not just bland in this fantastic film with a deliberate, y feel to it. Cole (Haley Joel Osment) is a young boy who can see dead people; Willis is a child psychologist who tries to help him deal with It, and to figure out what the ghosts want. A quiet film with a powerfulmessage about redemption, fear, and hope. Osment as tile tormented young boy gives a more wrenchingly real performance than many actors thrice his age are capable of. This will go on the "Ten Best" lists for 1999. PG-1- 3 (mild profanity, scariness, accident-relate- d gore and blood, very brief obscured partial nudity) EDS STAR WARS: EPISODE I PHANTOM MENACE: 3 Hi i i?t Hi" r i imj THE 13th 1 WARRIOR: 12 stars! A remarkably inept film in which Antonjo Banderas allegedly stars as an Aratr (with a Spanish accent, no less!) who helps a group of Norsemen defeat a horde of flesh-eatinPieced-togethe- r, badly written and at times incomprehensible. R (pervasive-violence and gore, decaptations, knifings, EDS H1.j etc., very mild profanity) THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR: 2 sleek-lookinstars. A classy remake:)' about a mega-ricguy (the Pierce Brosnan) who steals expensive art just for the fun of it. It's but withctef all smooth and flawless any emotional interest or real excitement. Pretty perfunctory, average stiiffr though Bill Conti's jazz score is superb. R (abundant nudity, sex, profanity) 2nT EDS WILD WILD WEST: 1 12 stars. Demeaning to women and relying on crass humor, the only redeeming qualities of the film are excellent special effects and Kenneth Branagh's Southern accent. To enjoy this film, switch off any expectations of quality entertainment ni and sit back and enjoy the ride. G iJQ (mild animated violence, intensity) &T&D3BG! Wonderful, endearing film sure to be on the list of favorites for viewers everywhere. Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant are great together, and Grant's flatmate leaves the audience roaring with laughs ter.
