Show THE ELWOOD INI TIN WORKS Suspension of Tim Establishment on Account of Clevelands Election To the Editor of the HERALD I notice in tub Salt Lake Tribune of this date that tho new Elwood Ind tin works 1 had closed their doors probably indefinitely indefi-nitely on account of the glorious Democratic Demo-cratic victory This is simply one of many Republican tin plate works on paper that failed to do its work in the campaign I herewith give an extract of a letter written me by a relative from Harrisburg Pa under date of Sept 22 1893 in reply to questions of my own The identity of the writer must be concealed as per his request re-quest I will say however that he has twice represented his Republican district in the state legislature and has twice given liberally of his funds and a summer of his time to Republican committees on presidential presi-dential campaign work He says Tin 1 I am weary of tin I fear posterity shall remember re-member his as the tin campaign We are working the tin racket for all it is worth and on as large a scale as can be easily controlled Personally I have no faith in the results Four years ago itinerant peddlers of tin ware in the McKinley district run factories everywhere Mind you I do not deny the existence in America of tin plate plants nor do I question the mineral being American but I do assert that the domestic product is a Bastard and an amalgum It bears about the same relation to the Swansea article that alack or culm does to the finest grade of merchantable coal I believe there is a factory in St Louis making a cheap grade of sheets for cheap roofing and fruit cans I do not know whether Americans aro mailing or can make a good sheet for dipping There is some very fair tin being made just at present this side of the Atlantic but by Welsh employer and Walsh labor American Ameri-can incentive and all for a purpose The metal is foreign and delivered here free of any expense Foreigners are not slow to take advantage of American opportunities to advance their personal interests If the gentleman you refer to is a friend whom you do not wish to see duped request him not to invest in tin works before tile election I elec-tion and in the mean time should you learn of a good tin deposit for sale let me know early OGDEN Nov 10 1692 101892LODIS LOUIS SWEATLAND |
