Show ADAld PAUL SHOT He Runs Against Phil Foote at Green River POOTES DESPERATE RESISTANCE i A Dozen Shots Fired In tie Darkness One of Which > Strikes Paul In the Thumb Foots Escapes At Green River yesterday morning just at daybreak Phil Foote gambler and desperado des-perado wanted hero for robbing a gambling gam-bling house at the point of a gun shot down Deputy Sheriff Adam Paul and again made his escape from the law Paul was only slightly wounded but will loss a portion of his right thumb as a result re-sult of the desperados aim Bver since Foote skipped his bond in this city last March Sheriff Burt has been 1 I making efforts to locate him Thursday he received word that Footo was in Green River stopping at the depot hotel there Deputy Marshal Len Qocdsell and Deputy Sheriffs Adam Paul and Joan Burbidgo were sent to Green River to apprehend Foote The officers arrived there at 4 oclock yesterday morning and waited in the hotel office unul I oclock being informed that Foote was in his room in tue rear of the house on the second floor A few moments later accompanied by the clerk of tbe Hotel IOu ofiicura wont to Footes room OPEN IT TODRSELP Paul knocked on the door and Foote who was evidently awake asked instantly who was there The hotel clerk replied aaking him to open the door Tne key was turned in the lock and then came Footos voice now open it yourself Paul at once threw back the door and dropping his gun on a level with Foote who could be seen in the dim light commanded com-manded him to throw up hIS hands Foote raised his hands to the height of his shoulders carrying a gun in his right As he got it on H line with Paul he fired The first shot grazed the deputy sheriffs scalp the muzzle at the gun being so close that the flash of the power burnt his forehead fore-head HR fired in return missiug Foote and a second and a third shot came from tho gamblers revolver PAUL WOUNDED The third struck Paul in the thumb oft of-t e right band tearing out a piece of bone and mangling it in a horrible manner Transferring nis gun to lila left nand the officer tried to are again but the gun failed to operate In the meantime Foote had fired two more shots one of which passed through Pauls coat the other grazing Bur bidges head At this both Goodsell and Burbidge fired several shots none of which took affect owing to the darkness they wee in Paul securing another revolver ran outside the house to prevent Footas escape from the window of bis room FOOTE AOXIK ESCAPES The otner officers hoping to draw the desperados last shot kept up a fire in the room but in the meantime ho had gotten out of the window and escaped over the outside balcony before the wounded officer had got A posse was at once organized and headed by Deputy Marshal Goodsell Foote was pursued tor over ten miles south of Greennow but finally escaped his pursuers Deputy Sheriffs Burbidge and Paul arrived ar-rived home this morning at 1 oclock the latter suffering great pain from his wound and the loss of blood HIS CAPTURE IMPROBABLE A desperate effort will bo made to take Fcote now out it is probable he will make good his escape as he has boores of friends in that section woo would shoot an officer on sight to protect him The crime for which Footo was wanted bare was tie robbery last February of the gambling house over Shades saloon on Main street He had lost a large sum of money in the place and suddenly pulling a gun held up the dealers of two tables and robbed both tills He was arrested and released re-leased on 1500 bond W J Shields and Jack Scott becoming his bondsman |
