Show B GENERAL BURTS PLAN. B The idea of General Burt to sell the Philip- Pines to Japan haB its attractions. Japan has come nearer solving one great economic question than any other nation how to support a. vast population in a small area so that none are very rich and none abjectly poor; they are progressive; they are over-crowded on their nine hundred islands; they would easily assimilate with the Filipinos, at least with the more enlightened tribes, and they would quickly subdue the others; they are both a martial and maratime people. It is possible that by reserving a station or two for coal and for depots it might be good to give Japan a show in those southern islands. Our soldier boys could come home; the tears of the goody-goodies and disgruntled Democracy would be dried there are certainly advantages in the plan. ' |
