Founded In northern Utah In 1891 by Edwin M. Whiting, who not only pioneered the Whiting family a Into the lumber Industry but was also a true pioneer of the Southwest. In the Z timberlands in Utah and Arizona he carved out of the wilderness the cor- nerstones of the Kaibab Lumber Industry as It stands today. His four sons, E. I., I Ralph E., Ernest J., Arthur C. Whiting became active in the various phases In I the lumber business In early childhood. During the 1920's the second generation I of Whiting Brothers established gasoline stations and garages throughout nor- them Arizona. Family Involvement In lumber manufacturing came during World War II. The Whitings operated several mills In Arizona and Utah both during and after the war, but the family commitment to lumbering was minor in scale until 1950 when a tremendous stand of timber was up for sale on Arizona's North Kaibab forest called the Big Saddle Timber Sale, out of state bidding ; competition almost drove the four Whiting brothers Into bankruptcy. However, the Big Saddle proved to be a good investment and In conjunction with building a the big new sawmill at Freedonla during 1950-1952, the brothers conceived the a business known as Kaibab Lumber Co. As the years progressed, so did growth I and sales. In the next twenty years, Kaibab would Incorporate Whiting Satlons, 1 building materials distribution centers and three new saw mills. Between 1970 J and 1977 Kaibab Industries would jump from $20,000,000 In annual sales to nearly ; $100,000,000. ! Employees at the Pangultch operation number over 150. Many have been with . the company for 25 years or more and have been an active part of Kaibab's : growth and change, all though Kaibab has diversified Interests, It remains ; primarily a forest products co. with almost complete reliance on trucks in its . logging operations and lumber distribution. In 1971 the road division was created a In Fredonla to meet US Forest Service requirements to construct properly . engineered timber access roads. Construction activities include surveying, road, ; right-of-way, clealng, excavation, culvert, installation of structures (such as ; cattle guards and gabions), plus gravel crushing and hauling. The members of 2 the road crew Include an engineer, surveyors, foreman, heavy equipment ; operators, mechanics and laborers. The crew operates 15 major pieces of heavy equipment which ranjie in cost from $200,000 D-8 cat to a $10 shovel. The tran . sportatlon division was also added to move the finished lumber to the market a place. In 1974 a Kiabab garden products division with the primary processing ' f? ckau9,ng ,acllltv wa located In Fredonla. In addition to the more than ! 10'000iUcubic Vards of decorative bark, soil amendment, and shavings marketed from the garden products, sawmill lumber production marketed in 1976 by Kaibab locations In Utah, Ariz, and Colorado totaled 107,000,000 board feet. i ; Over the past 25 years the company has gone from 1 mill, 1 company operation to the computer age to centralized con-a solldatlon known as Kaibab Industries. Though the future brings ; the risks and the challenges of environmental problems, ec-I cologlcal situations and over involvement with government bureaucracy, the new era also promises indefinite growth and I continued prosperity for he employees and shareholders.
