Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Thursday January 13,1994 MVFC Annual Awards given The Moab to Monument Valley Film Commission celebrated its most successful year in history at its annual awards banquet this year. Winner of this years special achievement award wrent to Don Holyoak. He has been active in Film work since he was a young boy, usually as a wrangler. He has spent countless hours of volunteer service in recruiting companies to film their projects in southeastern Utah. To land the movie Geronimo: An American Legend, and assure that Columbia filmed all of the here, Holyoak provided 23 days of complementary scouting picture service. Day by day he managed to pull more scenes from other states to Grand or San Juan county locations. White. This is the first such presentatioin and will be an award given only on rare occasions. White has literally dedicated his life to the local film industry. Over the past several years White has been a mountain of knowledge in documenting the areas film history and helping to develop the Moab-Monume- nt Valley Movie Museum and Library. It was the perseverance of George E. White that gave the Moab Film Commission (now Moab to Monument Valley Film Commission) the status of the longest ongoing film commission on earth. Special Appreciation awards were presented to several people in the following categories: VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR - Mary Engleman for hours working in the film commission office. PRIVATE LAND USE COOPERATION - Rick York (Moab Salt), John and Nancy Hauer, Heidi Redd, Harly Bates, and Peter Lawson. Along with the award, the Grand Standers get roasted for the dramatic, heroic, or funny roles played on camera, and sometimes behind the scene. 1993 Grand Stand Awards went to: Davina Smith (Blanding) for BEST DELIVERED LINES. Davina played the wife of Dead Shot, who was eventually hung at Fort San Carlos in Geronimo: An American Legend. Davina had a very dramatic scene at the hanging, which was cut for the big screen but will be back in the video release. Teresa McElhaney and Molly (Moab) for FINEST KIND CATERING SERVICE. A scene in the movie (released this Knights year) called for a nursing mother and baby. Teresa and Molly won the parts. Molly became the youngest extra ever to work in an area movie. Art Manzanares (Moab) for DONT ASK ME TO TRANSLATE. Art, who played a Mexican Federale, was called upon to be shot (point blank) by Geronimo. He was to plead for his life (in Spanish), but didnt speak Spanish. Not wanting to lose the part, he expressed his fear in a language all his own. The director he said. many production photographs he has contributed to film and inquires projects for this period have TALENT and PHOTOGRAPHY - Gego Gerhart for his time and talent as editor of the annual Reel Report, a newsletter used for area promotion, and the the y. was impressed enough to call it a take, with the promise to dub Spanish over his voice. John Hagner (Moab) for JUST ANOTHER PRETTY FACE. John played an old miner in Geronimo, and was made up to where he could hardly be recognized. Rusty Musselman for NOT JUST (Mon-ticell- ANOTHER o) PRETTY FACE. While Rusty wasnt on camera, all his treasures were. Musselman has been a movie prop master for over five decades. This year he worked three movies and two commercials, which all called for his many relics and bones. One of the sets in Josh and Sam had a large sign that read Rustys Reptile Ranch. City Slickers II, duplicated his Old West general store at the Dugout Ranch and hauled in all his Rusty Musselman, of Monticello, received an award at the recent MMVFC Award Banquet for being "NOT JUST ANOTHER PRETTY paraphenalia to dress the set. Jim Mattingly (Moab) for PLAY IT AGAIN SAM, AND AND AGAIN, AGAIN. Not appearing on camera, Jim snagged the job of filming Behind the Scenes for HBO on The Great Jeeping Tour Adventureflick with lightly clad (to put it lightly) female lovlies. Mike Sherman (Moab) for the BEST STUNT. Jini, working as a production assistant (PA), who was asked on the spur of the moment to make a OFF-CAMER- A flying dash to L.A. and back with a can of film (and no luggage) to be developed en route. She accomplished the mission under 24 hours, and with no plane tickets and a bogus credit card provided her' by the company. The new title: Moab to Monument Valley Commission (MMVFC). Both Moab and Monu- ment Valley have name recognition in the industry, reports president Don Holyoak. People usually think of Arizona when wanting information on Monument Valley, yet a good deal of the filming is done on the Utah side. We feel the new title will be more geographically If we can get companies calling MMVFC they will be more likely to pull their resources from des-criptiv- e. Holyoak also noted that this was the first year the film commission has had such success at bringing in film companies during the months of Nov off-seas- on corporation, and will work at raising additional funds to place in an investment trust that will eventually stabilize funding for these projects and others. MMV film commission members and director Bette Stanton will be working with Peggy Humphreys, and the satellite office in Monticello to develop San Juan County film sources. The group will identify potential locations on state private land, in counties. These sites will serve as alternatives to public land, when projects with short timetables do not provide for the often lengthly permit processing time required by the Bureau of Land Management.
