Show An August Tale r By Nora Vnnless ago 13 years Poor Molly She had been nl a new school only three days and although she was sweet and l pretty she strove In vain to gain the companionship of thc I girls of the school Hazel Hart pitied her In her loneliness loneli-ness but did not urge inviting her to Join their Vet when the I others objected object-ed But all wondeied at the girls strange sadness On the morning of her fourth day here Molly appeared at breakfast In a dress of pure black This excited still more curiosity among the girls Later In the day the matron of the school sent Hazel to Mollys room with a message After a timid knock which was not answered an-swered Hazel believing Molly had gone out unceremoniously pushed open the door and was on her way to place the note on the dresser when she saw a sight that made her kind heart ache In Qn instant she was on her knees beside a girl dressed In mourning who was kneeling by a tiny while bed with her arms around her As soon as Molly fell lint loving embrace she burst into tears J azel tried to quiet her and then sat with her arms still clasped about her waiting for her to speak Suddenly the violent I weeping ceased and Molly looked up Into the face of her friend saying Oh it was EO kind of you J shouldnt have broken down but She bowed her head on Hazels Ha-zels shoulder and wept again Hush dear JDont cried Hazel Then as the suet August wind blew in on them and the sun peeped through the window with aims locked around the neck of hem newlyfound sympathizer sympa-thizer Molly told her sad story She told of her fathers death In the Spanish war of her mothers death Just one year ago that tiny when she the only child had boon left in the care of a maiden mint who had never known a mothers love ami who had shifted her about from school to school until now she had reached the one In which our story finds hem and In all of them she had received little or none of the attention atten-tion which all girls love to have But for once she gained that for which she had so longed and Hazel left I her with a kiss I |
