Show A PROVO CASE The Enquirer of Provo of yesterday has a leader on the action of the Deputy Registrar in permitting Dr Pike of that place to register without taking the oath which was formulated by the Utah Commission Com-mission and usually made the test of a mans or womans right to have his or her name put upon the registration list which test determines who are entiled to vote Dr Pike went to register and reused re-used to lake the oath prescribed saying that the disqualifications therein mentioned men-tioned did not attach to him and hence he could not be required to take the oath the oath being a means on ly of finding out a mans qualification to register I After some little reflection the officer allowed the doctor to register being II satisfied that the doctor did not come within the proscribed class i In view of the action of Mr Hill the I registration officer in the premises the Enquirer says It will be a matter I curiosity to learn just how Mr Hill will act when a Jbnnon applicant for registration registra-tion shall make the same demand of him that was made by the nonMormon re ferred to Mr Hill is in nowise I no-wise authorized to draw any distinction between a Mormon and a nonMormon II when both apply for registration How Mr Hill will act it is impossible to say I but it is very true that he is not authorized author-ized to draw any distinction between a I Mormon and a nonMormon when they I apply to that officer for registration i registra-tion The officer cer is under no I necessity to apply the oath to any I person be the person Mormon or non Mormon his sole duty being to see that only those register who are eligible to registration In the case of Dr Pike the I officer was satisfied he was entitled to be 1i > 1 > f n 7 registered If a Mormon shall go to the I same officer with the same qualifications that Dr Pike had he may demand to be registered and refuse to take any oath I and the registration officer must refuse at his peril to register Iiim If the officer I permits a disqualified person to register and that person votes the person is liable for illegal voting There is nothing remarkable I re-markable in the proceeding whatever I and if a Mormon shall stand on his rights as did Dr Pike and be eligible as he to register it is safe to say that Mr Hill will register him Let it be tried |
