Sister Ella Rose, who has taught music to St. Josephs School students in Boise the past 20 years, was honored at a Mass and reception last month by more than 300 of her friends and students. A Eureka, Utah, native, Sister Ella Rose said she grew up in a mining camp in its heyday. She also grew up with music. Both parents were singers and musicians, and the family spent many Sundays singing and playing After graduation from SL Marys of the Wasatch College in Salt Lake City, Sister Ella Rose entered the Sisters of the Holy Cross. She had converted to Catholicism her sophomore year of college. One of her earliest assignments was teaching glee club, band, orchestra, private lessons, and other classes at St. Agnes in Los Angeles. Those were musical memorable years for her. She spent 30 years teaching in Catholic schools in California. Aside from music, one memory that stands out for Sister Ella Rose when she reflects on her life as a nun was her association with a doctor and his wife who converted to Catholicism. I was a patient of his, she said. One day he asked me into his office. He said, Since we met you, we have become interested in the Catholic faith. It was such a surprise. I kept wondering why he had picked me. Sister Ella Rose introduced the couple to the parish priest and got them started in inquiry classes. They were later baptized.
