Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE Wednesday, April 18, 2012 5 COLLABORATION continued from Page 4 saxophone accompaniment, which fits harmonically with the pre-recorded sound and piano. Maxwell will play piano and control the computer while Doug Benton, a graduate teaching assistant, will perform on saxophone in the 13-minute piece Maxwell titled as an anagram of Benton's name. "[The recording] nudges the saxophone part along," Maxwell said. "In the first four minutes, the saxophone reacts with the prerecorded parts, then the computer says, `Hey, this is what I've got." After that, the performance is based on what the synthesized recording picked up during the live performance. The name "Crosstalk" comes from the idea of tapes crossing different sounds onto one another and is the name for unwanted signal transfer between two different channels. When separate signals are recorded on more than one channel of magnetic tape, the signal can be picked up during playback of a another channel. The mix of electronic and acoustic music is a creative way to adapt the use of crosstalk, as is the combination of the two schools. "We are a crossover of ideas between the schools," said Miguel Chuaqui, head of the Electronic Music Studios and professor of the U's electronic music composition class. There will be 12 pieces performed at the event, all by students. These students are in a composition class and the twice-annual concert is their chance to show off their work. a.lewis@ chronicle.utah.edu BULLIED continued from Page 4 Nabozny's documentary tells the story of his own childhood struggles. It also deals with the aftermath of the bullying he endured during his young-adult years and the successful lawsuit he filed against the school district for neglecting to protect him. "Bullied" uses a combination of interviews, photographs and reenactments to portray Nabozny's struggles. Originally called Awareness Week, the annual Ally Week was created in 2008 to help spread awareness about bullying directed toward the LGBT community. The name was changed to reflect an acknowledgement of the allies of the community "An ally means, primarily, PHOTO COURTESY SCHOOL OF MUSIC Thursday's electro-acoustic concert "Crosstalk" is a collaborative effort between students at the U and Brigham Young University and will feature elements of traditional composition mixed with electronic production. those who identify as not part of the LGBT community, but as allies of the community, and work with us to acknowledge the different discrimination and also look at making policies and communities safe and welcoming and enrooting and equitable for LGBT individuals," said Kai Medina-Martinez, director of the LGBT Resource Center. On Thursday, the center will hold the Annual Social and Award ceremony for the Ally of the Year, which will be presented to the Alumni Association. Ally Awareness Week will also include a National Day of Silence rally on Friday, from I p.m. to 3 p.m. on the Union Patio. The National Day of Silence is a nationwide event designed to spread awareness about bullying and harassment against members of the LGBT community. "We're very concerned, I think, as a nation, currently, with bullying in general," Medina-Martinez said. For Medina-Martinez and other activists, bullying is especially concerning because it affects so many social groups, not just the LGBT community, and can occur among both students and adults. MedinaMartinez said bullying can take many different forms, including passive bullying and cyberbulling, and she's hoping Nabozny's work will begin to make serious headway toward open channels for progress. "That's partially why we brought in Jamie [Nabozny] and the documentary, to begin hopefully having that dialogue and discussion, that bullying occurs in many different ways," Medina-Martinez said.
