Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 10 CRAVING continued from Page 8 Hansen. Utah followers are curious to know if the youngsters are for real. Then there is The Wolfman, John White. White came out of nowhere last season and put the Utes on his back. Fans are just itching to see him take handoffs, even if it is only a few. On the other side of the ball, fans want a sneak peek of defensive tackle Star Lotulelei. They know that Lotulelei is a potential first-round NFL draft pick and seeing him in the spring game for a series or two will PRATICE simply remind Utah fans that the defensive line is in good hands. After all is said and done, there is a lot for Utah fans to take away from the spring game. They have to shatter the monotony of the offseason and the spring game is the perfect break. Sure, the game might not mean much to the coaches with headsets or the players in uniform, but it means an awful lot to the people buying tickets and merchandise. This isn't just another practice for the fans of the Utah football program. p.lee@chronicle.utah.edu BASEBALL continued from Page 7 Capper's credentials made Utah's offensive outburst perhaps even more impressive. The junior right-hander is BYU's normal Friday-night starter, but the Cougars (17-14, 6-3 West Coast Conference) don't play this weekend and were able to throw him in the midweek game. Capper came in with a 2.75 ERA, but the damage the Utes dealt him inflated it to 3.70. "It's always big to have a lead," said Cory Hunt. "That gives our pitchers some momentum to build on." A double over the right fielder's head continued from Page 8 didn't stumble across the intramural flag football regulations page. Things aren't much different from the player's perspective. As an ex-player, I can testify that nobody loves practice, regardless of any Tebow-like optimism they preach. Add the current weather to the mix and it's downright miserable. The overwhelming factor, however, has yet to be addressed: the chance of injury. from Parker Morin scored James Brooks and got the Utes started in the first. Later in the inning, Shaun Cooper blasted a two-run homer over the left-field wall. The Cougars took advantage of wildness from Utah starter Ben Mordini to climb back in the game. Mordini gave up three runs, walked four batters, hit another and threw five wild pitches in his 22/3 innings of work. Like most games in this rivalry, the teams made it close in the end. A triple from Dillon Robinson followed by an RBI single from Adam Law in the sixth got the Cougars within one, and they put the tying run on second with two outs in the eighth before Utah closer Tyler Wagner struck out Law to end the threat. Wednesday, April 18, 2012 In spite of what people might think, football is twice as dangerous when the players are going at half speed. For a finely tuned athletic machine, season-ending injuries occur when competition isn't all-out. Although the Utes won't literally be at half-speed, the spring game just isn't the same as a Pac-12 competition in October. Academically, the spring game is situated at the worst possible time as well. Upperclassmen are preparing for finals and the incoming freshmen who didn't graduate early are still in high school. The players are buried Morin added a long solo homer in the ninth to give the Utes an insurance run before Wagner worked a perfect ninth to notch his second save. Wagner blew a save against the Cougars earlier in the season and was pleased to get a shot at redemption. "It's nice to get back up there and show what I've got," Wagner said. "It was nice to get that two-runs lead instead of putting a little pressure on me." Hunt's return was noticeable for the Utes, who had been playing with a makeshift infield for several weeks. Not only did the sophomore record two hits, he also made several good plays in the field, including a sliding play in the ninth that prevented the Cougars from bringing the tying run to the plate. with studying for finals, writing term papers, and on top of that, new audibles, formations and plays. In the final full week of class, the football players have twice the workload. Regardless of my thoughts, the spring game tradition will continue across the country. But before anybody gets too worked up for some Ute-on-Ute action, keep this in mind. Heaven forbid, it only takes one wrong cut, one unfortunate hit to derail the 2012 season. Here's to glorified practice. d.siddoway@ chronicle.utah.edu "It's been tough being out this long time," Hunt said. "I just came out trying to help the team and have fun." Cooper, who came into the game hitting .194, had three extra-base hits for the Utes, which was an encouraging sign for a team that has often had trouble this season scoring runs. "That was probably the biggest bright spot of the day was two guys really got it going today ... and that was Cooper and Wagner," Kinneberg said. "Cooper hit a ball to rightcenter field, and that was huge, and Wagner was back to his old self with great sink and a great slider. Those two guys were the key guys for us today." bubba@chronicle.utah.edu Wilirjahr JOB POSTING J'Agin GROUP LEADERS (10.15 kids) for SLC School District After School program ONICLEONTWIVVER 19.5 hrs/wk; M-TH 2:30.5:30/6pm and Fridays 12:30-5:30/6pm.
