DENNIS Center segment of world's largest reinforced plastic rocket motor case is mated with forward segment in stand. When the third segdiameter ment is added, the case will measure 50 feet in length, st 13-fo- Tliiokol Tests The nation's largest glass rocket motor case fiberweigh- ing 26,000 pounds was filled with approximately 50,000 gallons of water weighing 400,000 withpounds and successfully stood 1.000 pounds per square inch of internal pressure. This test simulates t h e internal pressure which will be experienced by the case when loaded with solid propellnnt. The test was conducted at Thiokol Chemical Corporation's Wasatch Division. The huge case, measuring 50 feet in length and 13 feet in of three diameter, consists segments which were joined together on the test stand. The case was spun from 34 million of fiberglass miles filament, enough filament to encompass the earth 1,360 times. In the test, the proof pressure was held constant for 120 seconds and then decreased to zero. The case was tested in a vertical position with the forward skirt experiencing full thrust load plus the weight of the water in the case. This a total procedure simulated thrust load on the skirt of 1.750.000 pounds. The load applied to the skirt was 75 percent above the motor operating thrust. A significant achievement of this test was the successful performance of the segment joints which are fabricated from a laminate of steel shims and a fiberglass-resimatrix'. weigh 26,000 pounds, and be fabricated from, 34 million miles of glass fibers. The rocket motor case is designed to withstand 1200 pounds per square inch of internal pressure. Fiberglass Although the case successfully passed the pressure cycle, a skirt structural failure occurred midway through the 1,000 PSIG proof pressure hold. The motor case continued to hold 1,000 PSIG pressure after the skirt failure, and the simulated thrust continued to be transmitted through the failed skirt. The skirt failure during has necessitated an analysis of the skirt loading conditions; however, the pressure vessel and case joints successfully withstood PBNNBUHN& U.S. SAVINGS STAMPS AT SCHOOL ?
