Show the ingersoll sergeant drill companas Comp anys air compressors and rock drills the ingersoll sergeant drill co of new york city has recently published two very fine catalogues cataloguer catal covering some of the air compressors rock drills etc which they manufacture and by reason of the data and information contained in them they will be lound found valuable to those who are interested in mining or to those who can use compressed come identical terms of the same meaning from africa to alaska and from the atlantic coast to the pacific in view of the general interest now prevalent amongst mining men we think our readers will be interested inte reste d in brief descriptions covering some of these small compressors and drills figure no 1 illustrates the popular ingersoll sergeant class A straight line piston inlet air compressor which is exten FIGURE 1 air ir in many other fields of operation the no 33 cata catalogue loome illustrates and describes some of the principal styles of air compressors built by them but they construct compressors for any purpose being particularly equipped for anything special as their experience has extended over many years and their large shops at easton perm penn are especially supplied with special Da machinery chinery for the construction of their compressors and drills used where low cost inexpensive foundations and efficient service are the requirements these compressors are of the horizontal straight line steam actuated type and are entirely self contained the shaft and both cylinders being carried on a solid bed this thia construction admits of great strength and capacity in small space inexpensive foundations and easy transportation every part of the machine is very accessible and the piston can be removed from either complete and concise manner throughout his company has made a specialty of air corr coir pres sors and drills for thirty years past and their product is giving the highest possible results throughout the country in fact the terms ingersoll sergeant and rock drill being so closely associated have be consumption has made it a deserved favorite for plants of a permanent character they have patterns for many different proportions and modifications of the standard type thus adapting it for work varying between wide limits figure no 2 represents their class AC A ca C cly Cst straight raight line compressor with double acting tandem compound air cylinders and this pattern is sometimes preferred where a compound machine must be used for IM FIGURE 2 higher pressures and where considerations of floor space foundations or first cost preclude the use of the duplex compound in designing this macii machine ine they have incorporated important advantages over other compressors pres sors of its type the flywheels fly wheels steam valve mechanism and steam cylinder bylinder parts are accessible without pulling mhd machine to pieces the valves on the air cylinders are easily gotten at without disturbing the adjustment of the other parts water jacket achet FIGURE 4 der in a short time with ordinary tools without disturbing the flywheels fly wheels shaft or valve connections though it is seldom indeed that any attention is necess necessary aty save an occasional oiling I 1 this type of compressor is well suited for mining and tunneling work where a machine is expected to stand the most severe usage in regions remote from facilities for repair work and its great capacity for hard and continuous service together with its economy in steam ing on air cylinders is efficient for not only are the barrels jacketed but the four large heads offer increased cooling surface to say nothing of all stuffing boxes being kept cool on this machine is used their piston inlet device having vertical lift discharge valves with this construction there can be no throttling of the incoming air an indicator showing the incoming or admission line coincident with the atmospheric line or a little above it from fram the unspent momentum of the incoming air at the end of the stroke the high hiah pressure or compression cylinder is their improved type its valves moving by direct air pressure in these two air cylinders either the intake or discharge valves are practically free to move whenever the right time comes the moving force being elastic air pressure slightly greater on one side of the valves than on the other figure no 3 shows their class B st straight line belt driven type of compressor with piston air inlet which is entirely self contained the shaft and air cylinder being carried on one solid bed plate where wire rope transmission is preferred to belting 7 a grooved pulley can be substituted for the smooth face pulley shown in the cut or tangential water wheel of the pelton type can be mounted on the main shaft shaff ficare figure no 4 shows the class D D duplex air compressor made either with plain pulley for belt or with grooved pulley for rope transmission also made with gear ka crear and outboard bearing and for pelton water wheel or turbine this type is also made with compound air cylinders and receiver inter cooler LI i the ingersoll sergeant drill co manufactures fac tures many other types including corliss compressors having n simple steam and air cylinders simple steam and compound air cylinders compound steam cylinders and simple air cylinders double cross compound both condensing and condensing non in all cases their compressors are equipped with automatic regulating lating 11 1 1 devices thus securing economy by compressing practically aLy no more air than is consumed from moment to moment the regulator responding quickly to an increased consumption the piston inlet air cylinders used on these compressors give fine results and the inlet valves used are made from a solid billet of dead soft homogeneous open hearth steel punched and worked into form and size without welds over 1000 of these steel valves have been furnished with their compressors pres sors without a known case of breakage el 1 and they will furnish a guarantee with each machine to replace free of charge any piston inlet valve that ma may y break within five yea years rs from date of delivery they applied the piston inlet features to their compressors after an extensive experience with air valves of the and other types and designed the piston inlet cylinder to overcome the many and various objections inseparable from other patterns thiis this part of the machine has been gradually improved and perfected to a point quite equal to the best steam engine practice complete provision is made for surface cool ing while a full ai ir roThe t otee cylinder positive movement of the air valves with the smallest clearance spaces and entire reliability are assured the ingersol sergeant piston inlet compressor has met with such success and its popularity is so great that they are frequently called upon to replace air cylinders of other patterns this company manufactures four types of rock drills viz the ingersoll I 1 I 1 eclipse the new ingersoll the 16 sergeant and the are arc valve tappet embodying twenty different sizes from the 11 baby 11 up and allot all of which are perfection in themselves for they have been brought up to the standard through long years of experience and the company has not built rock drills as a specialty without learning much and in no field does practical experience count for more pounding a hole in tough material without give anywhere by simple brute force tries metals and designs to the limit and long experience peri ence has made it possible to leave out unnecessary parts for these drills strengthening weak points trying new metals a shade of change here and a trifle there resulting in always getting a little nearer perfection and guessing at nothing along with this is the gradual getting together of a strong force of trained and selected experts familiar with the history of their own and others experiments specialists in metals and design to 0 41 FIGURE 5 say nothing of their extensive and perfectly arranged shops the arrangements and details of which have been perfected through this ion long experience figure 5 shows a ser sergeant 9 bant 11 rock drill mounted on an adjustable tripod all their drills are interchangeable cable from shaft bars or tunnel columns to tripods and vice versa and many of our mines have both the tri tripods and aste columns using one or the other as occasion casion demands the ingersoll sergeant drills have found their way all over the globe in countries civilized and very much uncivilized on top of high mountain ranges and in the deepest mines in the world burrowing like a mole to depths where high temperatures are found or clinging to a perpendicular wall miles above sea level anywhere and everywhere that mineral wealth is sought if all the drills they have built were set equidistant equi distant around the earth at the equator there would be a continuous girdle of machines a mile apart or say fifteen minutes walk from one to the next the world around at an average weight of pounds per drill outfit their works have turned out pounds of rock drills alone good american metal well scattered like the seed of great deeds this firm has opened a branch office and wareroom ware room at south west temple st this city where they carry a large stock of air compressors air receivers rock drills columns tripods etc also a full line of duplicate parts so that customers can can get quick returns after ordering |
