Oden U a lively, hustling town, and will reap her reward in good hard cash each year from now hence forward. The Independent shop has been pretty badly demoralized for the last couple of months on Recount of the scarcity of printers print-ers in this city, hut it will be different from now on. A competent com-petent "gang" has been socured, and the sheet will come out on lime hereafter. F. K. Gabriel, editor of the Tooele Transcript, has gone to his reward beyond the veil of dfiith. -Editor Gabriel was an exile from his home in the East on account of ill health, but his Nemesis finally overtook him. lie worked hard to give Tooele Con uly people n good paper, mil that he should be called away ere he reaped the fruits of hi labors on earth is very sad. The Independent has by some means incurred the displeasure dis-pleasure of the manager of the I'rovo Daily Enquirer, as that worthy has removPd the name of this paper from the exchange list of the Provo family journal. Strange as it may seem, we like to read the county seut contemporary, con-temporary, and will be obliged lo borrow that sheet or to sub-tenba sub-tenba for it until Mr. Graham recovers his wonted good nature. The St. George Union n coupU of weeks ago was growling growl-ing ubout the cold weather. A reference to the Union's temperature tem-perature table showed that on one night the thermometer registered ns low as 18 deg above zero, with a maximum daily register Bmnewhere in the 60s. Wonder what St. George people would do if it once got real cold down there? About 20 deg. below zero, for instance? Dr. Peterson is this week hal ing demonstrated to him the . power of advertising as a means ut attracting attention. Doc lind arranged to have Santa vjimus open a season s encaire ti mental his place on Saturday, lhe lilt), and so tried to an nounco in The Independent. lhe proof reader, however, a lowed t ho date to be civeu mit as the 4th. and since then Doc. has been kept busy exDluininir 1 to numerous .cullers why Santa does not appear as billed. The anathemas Doc. bestows upon the proof reader are tempered somewhat by the lealizution that it pays to advertise. The attitude of President Mchinley toward Cuba, is, in our estimation, rotten, to say lhe least. He takes the proper stand in regard to Hawaii, and no doubt thinks that one Annexation Annex-ation scheme should be settled before another is sprung. This is all very wtll so far as it goes, but it will not prevent the mas. sacro and starvation of thousands thou-sands of poor Cubaas in the meantime. The possession of noin Luba and Hawaii are neces-"17 neces-"17 for the future peace and well-being of the United States, nd , both should be acquired without delay. TUN 31 A Mil. N QUA UN Y. '1 he nimble deposits up Hobble Creek canyon nre beginning be-ginning to attract attention, and development work was com menced a couple of weeks tdnce, us was noted in The Independ- eiit. Mr J'oii (J. Ktibl.ins, who has the development work in charge, has been here a great deal lately, and is pushing the project to the best of bis ability The Provo Uloniau last Saturday contained a pretty full write-up of the quarry, togetlu r with a report of Dr J. E. Tnl. mage, both of wbirh we append- "The pr-ipeity of the Hobble Creek marble quarry consists of 8-10 acres situated in Utah county. The ledge of maible i uncovered, showing a solid formation for-mation of from 30 to To feet in thickness over the whole extent of the 810 acres. The stone is of unique color and texture, being be-ing chocolate brown color marble mar-ble set with concretions which show cryitalization calcite representing re-presenting as it were gems of raro briliuncy in a chocolate setting. "A beautiful stream of water runs through the formation giving giv-ing ample power for running electric drills and appliances for quarrying this stone at a very low expense. The properly is situated about eight miles from the K. O. W. and U. P. railways at Springville, Utah. The road Irom the quarry to the railway is an easy down grade, so that heavy loads can be hauled on drays at very 6inall expense. The quarrying can be carried on from this deposit for a num ber ot years without necessary stripping any of the cround Qjarrying can be done here for less money than in any other parts ot the United Stales. 'Dr J. falmaue savs 'The ston6 is a variety concre tionary limestone,' and consists ol a number of concretions or nodules globular and elinsoida held together by a calccrotis ce incut. The nodules vary greatly in size; some being smaller than peas, ami others from four lo five inches in diameter. The nodules are of well defined con crelis structure and in' many cases show original menclei aboot which the concretions is gathered, ah analysis perform ed by myself on one of these is coluled concretions showed the specimen to contain the following follow-ing ingredients: Silica, 1.09 per cent; Alumina, 1.48 per cent Calcimin Cabb. 89.34. The separate concretions and the massive stones are sucepti-ble sucepti-ble of a very high polish, and in a polished condition uresent a very beautiful appearance. lhe stone is comparatively free Irom ingredients such as would interfere with use for ornamen-tal ornamen-tal and building purposes, and I believo it well adapted for iuch uses. I regard it as one of the most valuable of stone deposits ot this region. " TUN BEET SUGAR 110031. The beet sugar boom is taking on big proportions, especially in western New York, Ohio, the western states and on the Pacific coast, says the Orange Judd Farmer. Many new factories nre projected, and if intelligence intel-ligence and good management be used those that are buib should be so successful as to encourage others, until the. United States produces all the! sugar it consumes. But ignorance and mismanagement will cause discouraging failure that ' no amount ol misguided enthusiasm en-thusiasm can correct. We , b- serve that much erronoous talk is uttered on this subject, which if heeded cannot fail to invite failure. The whole truth about the business, its weak as well as its strong points, should befullv understood. Then the risk will be reduced to the minimum and success will be insured. A boom that will he followed by a reaction is to be avoided above all things in developing the domestic beet sugar industry. The real merits of the case are enough. Let the object be to so go into this leet sugar proposition that after the enthiui ism of the moment has waned, the farmer, laborer and capitalist will be satisfied to stick to the new industry It is ibis long, steady, persistent devotion de-votion toa new industry, coupled with expciience, knowledge, capital atid right management, that creates enduring success. Tlint's the stuff needed in the sugar industry. The editor of the Logan Nation Na-tion has formulated and published pub-lished a code of rules governing his "free list." He declares that no entertainment of any sort which does not accord the editor edi-tor free admission will receive attention in the way of a write-up. write-up. This is pretty severe, but perhaps circumstances in Loiran justify it. It has always seemed to us that a newspaper which contracted to supply its subscribers sub-scribers with the msws should aim to do so, whether or not the parties most nearly concerned were friends or enemies of the paper. News is news and the people want it, and the fact that a reporter has to pay for it is no reason why it should be with held from the public which ex pects it. The best way to secure publicity for the proceedings of meetings, parties, etc., when so desired, is to notify the editor in advance a sufficient length of lime, so that he can arrange to attend or have the affair report ed by others. A Millard county young lady is indiirnant becauso an entire stranger, while under the in- fluency of liquor, called on her and at once proposed main mony. I be young woman should not resent this too hotly. Some women discover that th only sober moments their hus bands ever had wera when they proposed matrimony.
