And there Is no short way! Would you seek the royal road to the plnacle of your life's highest posi-bilities? posi-bilities? Then move forward, watch-iiig watch-iiig for a guide-post with the single word "Effort!" Turn in by It und press on, though It does not lead by Bowery paths through valley Ileitis. Your highest, like a mountain-tup, will never seem to move toward you until you move towards it. Ways of life i re thus divided: to the doubting doubt-ing and timid ones, the lowly paths that give no wide outlook; to the fearless and purposeful ones, ways that climb upward, leading by many grand experiences to a prospect most broad and to an atmosphere most exhilarating. ex-hilarating. And what is this upward triumph over the downward tendencies tenden-cies of our nature, but the counterpart counter-part of real mountain climbing, in which the world ever grows broader and yet more silent at every forward step and backward glance. There, alone with the highest, our hearts are filled with mingling emotions, our eyes glisten with tears and we know not why; save that we are small, smaller in relation to the universe than an invisible animalcule is to us great greater than all created things if we unite our force with the force above, weak weaker than veriest thread if we forget our union with the great human family below, sad sadder than we can unders'and because so many of our fellows are contented with narrow valley-sight. TI1E ROAD OF LIFE. The sign-post of our duty Is pointing up tlic hill. Above the valley's beauty, That stretches soft and still. The upward path Is dentod. Where heroes' feet have trod; Yet we would lie contented l'pon the flower-strewn sod. 'Tis 111 to stay replnii.g. llecause the way Is Ions; For vlcor comes with climbing, And effort makes us strong. And though It be not Riven To us to reach the skies; To know how we have striven May helo another rise. Effort overcometh the world, for effort is faith in oneself, and in the value of life, und in the right of the world to the best we can accomplish. Effort well-sustained and well-directedthis is the victory! Put would you seek a shorter way? Then use ' Longing" as your guide-post. It leads by dream paths to golden glories that vanish when you awake, it woos you with dazzled eyes out into in-to a dreary desert and leaves jou to enjoy the substance fa mirage. It weakens your manliness for action, not longing, is life. Far better to toil the path that has been proved by all the ages. The strong are those who make the most of life as it conies to them; who spurn ludnlerice as they would scorpions; scor-pions; who turn the defeats of life in to more certain victories by struggling on when all seems lost; who yie'd to neither difficulties nor disappointments, disappoint-ments, uot because they stop to argue out advantages, but because the spirit of a true man despises yielding cannot yield! These are the ones who stand serene otter great resist logs, whose deeds no matter about mens names! are woven Into every progress, and whose freely spent efforts ef-forts are the secret of human triumphs. tri-umphs. They are a goodly company, whoin no perishable book shall ever fully record, but whose works live though the hands that wrought be dead. Herein is your hope and mine, humble hum-ble men of purpose. Shall wo credit Luther with the Reformation? No! rather he merely rolced a feeling that was moving resistlcssly through the awakening . European giant. Without that dumb cry for freedom of thought a cry that was not solely a religious protest he might well have lingered within the scholastic walls of Whittenbcrg. Shall we paint the signers of our Declaration as heroes? Yes, if you will. Yet surely they came to the front because there was a public opinion back of them, and this was made up of those nameless yet conscientious elements of a country's life that arc the substratum sub-stratum and the very substance also of all great forward movements. And on the other hand shall we credit Alarlc with disrupting the Roman Empire? No! his strength consisted in the weakness of his enemies, ene-mies, who, raised to Heaven by their privileges, brought themselves down to destruction; not by the wickedness of any one man, but by the general unrighteousness and consequent feebleness fee-bleness of the many. Alas! the strong and the weak together to-gether make up a nation, and its continuous con-tinuous power is possible only by an Increase of the strong and a decrease of the weak. At this time of the year a cold is very easily contracted, and if left to run its course without the aid of some reliable cough medicine is liable to result in that dread disease, pneumonia. pneu-monia. We know of no better remedy rem-edy to cure a cough or cold than Chamberlain's Cough Iicmedy. We have used it quite extensively and it has always given entire satisfaction. Oolagah, Ind. Ter. Chief.
