Show : THE ZEPHYR/FEBRU WHEN THE RCH 2006 CHANGE IS AN IMPROVEMENT DEMISE of the ATLAS MILL THE ATLAS MILL built in the early 60s by Charlie Steen was once the largest employer in Grand County. In the early 80s, when the price of uranium plummmeted, the mill shut down, a fourth of Moab's work force found themselves out of work, and Moab began its transformation from the "Uranium Capital of the World" to the "Mountain Bike Capital of the World" to the "Quick Condo Capital of the World." When the top photo was taken, the demolition of the mill had already begun. Today the mill is gone and the government is about to begin removal of the adjacent tailings pile to a safer location near Crescent Jct. What will become of the land, once the toxic pile is remove and the site deemed safe? We can HOPE for a park, but the real estate there will be worth millions. Will we someday see the Atlas Hilton & Golf Course? If you want to predict Moab's future, look at its recent past...JS MOAB'S SOURCE FOR: YON by Footprints 121 East 100 South, The Footprints Building Moab, UT 84532 oS 435.259.3443 footprints@feets.com www.footprints-inc.com eae EVM Sg & Upgrades Network Installation & Support Cae a ere SAILOR JIMBO YOUNG JOHN SHOWS HIS PECS... |
