Nova profiles the work of this eminent brain researcher on Secrets ofthe Mind, airing Tuesday,- Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. Once referred to as one of the most interesting neuroscientists of our time," Ramachandran has a passion for big philosophical questions. What is consciousness? What do we mean by a belief? How does the brain create our sense of reality? Born in India, Ramachandran ia professor and director of the Center for Brain and Cognition at the University of California, San Diego. A tireless researcher and clinician-an- d author ofPhantoms in the Brain-h- e ia also an avid fan of Sherlock Holmes. The great detective might well be speakingto his admirer when he says in one story, "I know, mydear Watson, that you share my love of all that ia bizarre and outside the conventions and humdrum routines of everyday life." Ramachandran introduces Nova to four cases that are very Sherlock Holmes: Dereks left arm was amputated yeanago after a motorcycle accident. But in a sense known as "phantom limb, he continues to have vivid sensations in the missinglimb. When he shaves, for example, he feels a stroking movement across his missing hand. Graham was in acaraccident that damaged the visual center ufliis brain, leaving him one of the worlds few known blind sight patients. Although he is conventionally blind to everything on hia right, he can tell you ifsomethingia movingthere, and even the direction it is moving. David suffers from Capgras Delusion, one of the strangest conditions Ramachandran has yetencounte red. When David awoke from a coma after a severe car accident, his mental capacities seemed intact But soon he was innsting that his parents had been replaced by doubles. According to David, they looked exactly like his mother and father, but were impostors. John has temporal lobe epilepsy and often has visions. After his seizures he becomes convinced he is a prophet. At times, he even thinks he is God. Why does this sometimes happen in patients with temporal weekend. On Saturday morning, grandma (that's me) thought it might be a good idea to give his parents a rest and take him for an outing. We went to the grocery store. Beqjamin isnt really a baby any more. And hes not even a toddler because he's much too fast. Lets say hes a young preschooler. Well, I took the young preschooler into the store where he immediately took hold of a pint sized shopping cart. He looked so charming standing there grasping its handle I thought "Why not? I didnt know lives would be at risk. But in less than five seconds I found out they were. Before you could say paper or plastic he went runningofTftill speed ahead emergency stop, veeringaround displays and full-siz- e shoppers at the speed of a torpedo. I was hollering, "Stop that kid! " But folks were too busy scrambling out of the way. If he hadn't hit the display of -- lobe seizures'" asKs ttamacnandran. Might it mean that we all have a specialized structure in our brains, a kind of God Spot, that opens us to religious feelings? In true Holmesian fashion, Ramachandran attacks each of these riddles by combining clinical observations and scientific reasoning with a knack for asking the right questions. In Dereks case, how does the brain react when it no longer gets the expected input froma particular sectorofthe body? Or with David, why do hia parents voices evoke a warm, femilial response, while the sight of them does not? As odd as these cases may Bcem, the explanations are sometimes surprisingly simple. Or as the great detective once said, the more bizarre a thing is the less mysterious it proves to be. Holmes, of course, was after the mystery of the criminal mind. For Ramachandran, these cases throw remarkable new light on how all our minds work. Somehow, I had to slow down the pint-size- d shopper. Wildly I looked around for some rope to hobble him. No rope. Justcanned fruitand juice and he was already squirming, trying to pull my handsoiTof his collar. Then I spied tliem! Gallon jugaof apple cider stacked in a row. Now that would slow him down a fair pace! Ben was delighted when I picked up two jugs and carefully fit them down inside the mini-carthough the entire basket was then filled. Come on fellah, I urged walking backwards and beckoning him to proceed like a traffic cop. He had to really put his weight against the bar to get it going, but now his pace wus slow and steady. No more erratic fish tailing, no more ileeingshoppers. We went from a possible crime scene to breathing rhythmically again . Benjamin took his job seriously. I pointed him across the store and there he'd inarch, never takinghis hands ofT the handle, until Id say, Here Bon, and hand him a pound of butter or a package of crackers. These he took solemnly and carefully stacked on top of the cider. I could see hia little man brain at work - he had a job to do and he would do it! We were alow. People were patient. Even smiling down at the little mister at work. Lucky for him we didn't encounter anyone he chased like rabbits 30 minutes before.
