FIRST- tl individual, under GoJ' s law?, with certain unalienable right?. - Private business, including airlines, expand their businesses. It is also true that private businesses, including airlines, keep ahead of demand by increasing their tools. And, it is obvious that the airplane is the primary tool of air transport. Let MATS stand as a shining example of government not solving its air transport problems while at the same time paying subsidies to private carriers who often fly partly empty. 6-2- 333 J. Truman St., Salt Lake City, Utah, makes a typewritten copy of a message as he receives it, while serving aboard the destroyer USS Gurke operating with the Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific. The destroyer with its speed and maneuverability has long been known as the workhorse of the fleet and rightly so', for these qualities make the tincan ideally suited for use in any combination of forces. Editorial are cordially invited to attend the Singer You G.I.-S.O.- P. (The two terms, G. I. and S. O. P., are World War II slang. The first means specifically Government Issue but has picked up a more generic meaning of just government with a military connotation. The second term S. O. P. is also military in and simply means Standard Operational Procedure. The latter is used to explain a fouled ' up situation.) FALL FABRIC FASHION SHOW con-noti- on The president of these United States is deeply concerned over the problem of troops, supplies and personnel. A crash program has been started to activate Air National Guard units. air-lifti- ng We take the position that this would not have been the serious problem it now is if the government had not been in the air transport business competing with private industry. We also recognize there is some military air transportation that might have to travel exclusively by military transport rather than by commercial carrier. We have another point concerning the competition given the private airlines by MATS (Military Air Transport). We are indebted to Mr. Willis Stone, publisher of the FACT SHEET, a compilation of researched information, which points out the cost of operation and waste of some 700 government corporations which compete with private industry. For full information you can reach Mr. Stone at 6413 Frank-lin- e Avenue, P.O. Box 2943, Los Angeles 28, California. The duties of MATS, according to Mr. Stone, fall into three distinct functions: 1. HARDCORE for the sudden mass movement of troops, supplies and equipment to one or more world trouble spots; 2. SPECIAL MISSION for the movement of personnel or cargo having high security classifications or off - route destinations; and, 3. PIPELINE for the maintenance of a personnel and supply pipeline in airline comes from an presenting Industrial Fund free from congressional control. In the fiscal year of 1960, 93 per cent of military passenger traffic moved between areas served by commercial carriers. Fifty-seve- n per cent of this traffic moved between areas served by commercial carriers. per cent of this traffic can be handled by private carriers in presently operating aircraft. Eighty-nin- e per cent of the military cargo traffic will move between areas served by commercial carriers. Twenty-nin- e per cent of military cargo can be handled by presently operating commercial aircraft. Comm ittees Congressional and Executive Committees have recommended that PIPELINE be turned over to U.S.-FlCommercial Airlines. The bureau handling MATS refuses to comply with the recommendations. Putting aside depreciation, insurance, interest, rent or taxes, we can appraise other savings to the taxpayer if the presently operating commercial airlines were to handle the job. In twelve years . . . 1951 to 1962, subsidies for international airlines will amount to $251,340,-00If commercial airlines had been permitted to handle but 25 per cent of the passenger traffic and 50 per cent of the mail which MATS handled, these payments could have been 0. saved. It is obvious that if all practical passenger traffic and mail cargo traffic had been handled by private airlines the over-a- ll tax savings plus the increased made. It is admitted by MATS that to 84 percent of the total flying hours of MATS is logged as the PIPELINE transport system. PIPELINE operates over 115,-00- 0 miles of global routes through 37 nations at a cost of 83 $275,553,000.00 money for for 1960. The this expenditure SOUTHEAST THEATER Thursday, Aug. 17 Friday, Aug. 18 2:30 P.M. 2:30 P.M. ag first and second could be han- to be held on the stage of the even the third classification though we do believe that even the dled by private means. FOR FALL 1961 Fifty-s- corporation tax revenue would equal five times the subsidies. That w'ould mean that by bil1962 a savings of some 1 lion dollars could have been fashion. We will confine ourselves to A GLIMPSE INTO FABRICS If private airlines had not had MATS as a competitor JFK would not now be so concerned with his air transport problems. Instead, the resulting expansion of private commercial airlines to handle the MATS job plus their own normal expansion would have been enough to meet the present requirements.
