There is very little unemployed in Berlin. You dont see panhandlers on the street. There arent men standing around on the streets in Berlin. Just about everybody works. Trom Salt Like ; City The increase in "the use of water in South Salt Lake has risen gradually over the last few years, declared Mr. Bill Ander-to- n, Water Superintendent, South Salt Lake. If the water supply remains at about what it has been this last year we do not expect curtailment in services to the residents in this area. We do not have enough water sources of our own to supply the needs of the city so wre buy water every year from Salt Lake City, some $7,000 worth this last year. The reduction in the property tax level also is made possible through the use of the sales tax for capital improvements. The entire administration of the City of South Salt Lake is operated on 11 mills. The 11 mills comes from the general fund. Last year, when the levy was 17 mills the balance of six mills went into the sinking fund. When asked why the proposed Lighting Improvement District was not paid for by property taxes Mrs. Martha Toombs, City Recorder, replied, Businessmen pay 60 per cent of the taxes so it would be unfair to have the property tax pay for the lighting district. Right now we are marking time until the freeway is in. We plan to make a lighting district on Truman Avenue, Whitlock Avenue, Second East Street, Third East Street and Eighth West Street sometime in the future. Of all the cities in the valley, Salt Lake City, South Sal Lake, Murray, Midvale and Sandy, South Salt Lake is the only city that has a lowered mill levy, according to the Salt Lake Tribune report published August 15, 1961. Each mill decrease will mean a reduction, for the taxpayer, of $1 per $1000 of assessed valuation on his next property tax levy in South Salt Lake. If the home owner has a house valued at $10,000 and assessed at $2,000, a resident of South Salt Lake will enjoy a reduction of $5.80. Further business of the city council was to deny the two hearof ings regarding the rezoning business residential property to property. Double Sessions At Five Schools An estimated 41,400 pupils will enter Granite District school classrooms on August 29, according to Sept. Elmer J. Hartvigsen. The 44 school buildings in the district will be pushed by the addition of 3000 more students this year than last. There remains a serious shortGranite age of teachers in the District. There is an urgent need for from 50 to 60 more teachers. Double Session Seven schools will open their sessions. That doors to double-da- y means that from an early mornwill ing hour one set of children receive instruction, a different set of children will fill the school in the afternoon to receive their instruction. The latter group will be going home shortly after six p.m. The schools affected by i mble-da- y sessions are: Hillsdale, Granger, David Gourley, Cottonwood, Woodstock and Oquirrh Hills. So, August 29th will see shining faces answering the school bell with Look, Look, Sally, Sally, Double, Double! |
