Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Thursday September 24, Yt.: - Literature workshop aimed at children by Janet Wilcox If you're one of the many parents who have decided it's time to wean junior from TV, then you're in luck and sornt help is on the way. Dr. James Jacobs, of the BYU, will be conducting a Childrens Literature workshop targeted for both kids and their parents . Janet Wilcox, project director, stated that the primary goal of the workshop is to help children and adults utilize good ay children's literature regularly; them knowledgeable to make about book selection and ;he values in good literature. On October 1, Dr. Jacobs will meet with students of each grade levels at Blanding Elementary School: third grade at 9, fourth at 10, fifth at 1 and sixth at 2. A session for the faculty will begin at 3:20. Parents are invited to any or all of the sessions. Thursday night at 7:30 there will be a general session sponsored by the PTA. At 9:00 Dr. Jacobs will meet with leaders of the Junior Great Books program to answer question. Dr. Jacobs received his MAT The workshop will consist of 2 sessions on September 30, at the Albert R. Lyman school: one at 2p.m. for second grader. , and one at 3:15 for, faculty and parents. He has participated actively in seminars and workshops throughout the country and is recognized as an expert in children's literature. Most recently he was a member of the 1981 Caldecott Committee, which selects the most distinguished picture book published in America each year. Jacobs will use a multi-med- ia presentation during the workshop, together with his enthusiastic style, which is sure to convert many an avowed TV viewer to the joys of reading. As a reinforcement and follow through to the 2 -- day workshop, KUTA will broadcast 8 week series entitled, Into A Child's Mind which was produced by Utah State University and narrated by Ruth Rice. The series examines the heritage of children's literature, its values, violence, and vision. The series will be broadcast over KUTA each Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. starting October 7. The funding for the workshop comes in part from a grant from the Utah Endowment, for the Humanities. K-CA- R Native American Days tomorrow in Montezuma Creek will begin with a parade at 12;30 p.m. followed by a program at the Montezuma Creek Elementary spring to alleviate curriculum conflicts and, organizers hope, coincide with the dedication of a new school. The theme for the school year and the parade is Searching for a Rainbow. That is Naats'-iilii- d Ha'nita in Navajo. Awards will be given to each as float, participating entry-suc- h School.
