on a steamer to portland where we stay one dav and take an ocean steamer for san francisco alie trip to occupy six days from ogden to the golden detate metropolis the party was made up of people from all parts of the territory most of them young probably not a dozen old folks in the company utah county has several representatives among the number are the following ladies and gentlemen miss ida coombs and charles W wright of paydon and misa H A winters of tuesday morning july our party of iao lett ogden in charge of mr ingalls after a very pleasant ride during which time we gazed with inquisitive eyes upon the famed devils slide ont thousand mile tree etc and a raging rire in the mountains near our route which looked very much like an active volcano from a distance we arrived iu green river where those who had no picnic along took supper nothing 01 importance transpired so far unless we deem the following important A gentleman one of our party was oui walking with four young ladies two on each arm at green kiver and in the midst of profuse compliments bestow eci to the right and left his false teeth flew out and dropped through a crack anu went under the platform great scotta S he wished he had gone under instead 01 his chewers he remained silent while the cruel girls nearly burst with laugh ter after collecting his shattered wits ae went to work and tugged and putt ea away until ho succeeded m tearing up a plank when he recovered his teeth m time to catch our tram which had whistled out during this interesting performance for mance in which all the fair damsell deserted the dude in passing through the tunnels and snow sheds it was amusing to hear the girls scream and see their positions aa we emerged from the darkness dark nyss they were seen clutching at everything and anything within their reach and staring wildly around some of the boys took great delight in watching tramps board the brakes of the moving cars and in seeing the train men oust aside from the pleasant weather american falls where we first crossed the snake eiver the jolly time within the cars and the sight of an old gentleman seated on a milk stool under a huge sage brush in the sun reading a newspaper near caldwell idaho nothing of interest came up until after leaving huntington agn wednesday afternoon here we commenced ascending the blue mountains union and baker cities are two very pretty places which we passed like a flash as they are on the down grade taking supper at le grande we immediately entered a beautiful forest of pines which continued for nearly 50 miles we passed down this entire distance through a narrow ravine which had a rippling brook coursing its length both aidea of the ravine were covered with a rich growth of grass which was pierced by the evergreen ever green pines through which romantic little paths winding in and out of tho dense woods could be seen here we passed through a dark tunnel out in the seeming tropical verdure then through a cut whose sides rose high above over a tressel and into the forest again here overtook us and nest morning we found ourselves at the dalles oregon and for first time beheld the scenic columbia the trip down this river affords the observer a moat picturesque view of natures lavish beauties alie tranquil columbia moving slowly westward from the side which rear the lofty fir and pine covered mountains mount hood was because of the dense clouds covering the southern sky at cascade locks we took a narrow train to a place called lower cascade six miles below the object of this change will be understood when we are reminded eliat at this point we find alie rapids around which the government are having locks constructed steamers being unable to pass this place until the lockeard loc keare completed A future letter will contain an account of our visits through alie salmon canneries one days stay at portland and our pleasant two days voyage from portland to san francisco on the bosom of the broad pacific suffice it to say that this unintelligible letter was written while our noble steamer the oregon was breasting a B velling sea and that we arrived in san francisco about noon to day without having had an accident ever so trivial to mar the pleasure of alie excursion sea sickness sick nesa cause peculiar sensations and your correspondent having a slight attack of it and writing under a peculiar letter I 1 suppose but am in no state to judge MILES siy CAL july ac in the little quiet settlements of utah it is thought by some that little respect is paid to sunday but when to the metropolis of the pacific it is not a drop in the hogshead hogs head of course alie larger the flock alie greater alie of the black sheep but of that sunday is made a alsy of in san francisco by more people perhaps than disregard that daiy diy half of utah saloon doors and tha streets generally resemble the entrance of a bee hive in swarming time all liquor stores confectionary tobacco stands and a goodly portion of dry goods houses aro running in full blast suan places as the cliff house autro utro heighten Heigh te golden gate park and woodwards gardens are throne with eo pie nearly all day indeed die bells ring and sound invitingly vi to a certain class only to help compose the musical din clisi of a largo city there is ablass of people who seem to gladly refrain from participating in the programmed for this day spending their time in secluded rest one looking at the closed windows of would pronounce the houses descried but a few tolls of the fire belland soon issues forth a bead from almast every department on sunday july bell wad rung three different times but it beema that the fire organization here is so complete that very seldom a fire lias any chance to do any great amount of damage THERE are many pleasure resorts lacre prominent among which is the golden gate park a place three miles long and half a mile wide and containing 1013 acres it haa been arranged by alie city at a cost of about one very striking feature of place is a monument erected in memory of francis key author of the star spangled banner by james lick HEIGHTS are similar in nature to the park defending Dec ending the hill from these heights about hau way down to the oceans edg eone walks out upon the balcony of the Cliff house from which place aa many as a hundred bals can bo seen at one time lounging about on the warm rocks this ia a grand sight indeed and proves a great attraction to the cliff house no person is allowed to injure or molest them WOODWARDS have been a won derbut since that gent lemans death the hand of ruin has left many finger marks at one time the place contained a good many hundred animals besides the curiosities in plant life now many cages are empty and destruction looks from all corners THE extreme heat of san francisco is commented on a great deal in utah but it is incomparably a better climate here in july than in utah it even becomes so cool evenings that summer overcoats are extensively worn during the day as well as evening there is a refreshing aea breeze JULY |
