Show LAUGHABLE IF NOT SO SERIOUS. H The three principal daily papers in this city I are in a fix nowadays. Last year the News I stood manfully by the renegade Republicans in H the counsel and declared that the Mayor was I of little account, that the burden of good gov. eminent rested in the council. H The Tribune pointed out the law correctly I and insisted that when men were elected to of I flee by a party their allegiance was to that party. The Herald chuckled over the situation, anj I when Republican or supposed Republican Coun I oilmen betrayed their trust and blocked business I pointed out the loveliness of a Republican ad I ministration of affairs. I But now the News says the Mayor is the real I thing and his desires should be gratified in as I much as he is proceeding according to the straight I letter of the law. I The Tribune pats the majority of the council I on the back and bids them hold fast as they are the real legal managers of city affairs. I The Herald looks upon the helpless Demo I cratic mayor and hopelessly sighs for the flesh I pots that were to be uncorked with a Democratic I administration, and loudly explains that nothing I is due Republicans, and that if they receive any- I thing it must be from courtesy, not at all from right. In the meantime "there is nothing in it" I for'the Herald despite "its heroic struggle" to I elect the ticket. And the people "just laff" over I the situation. I In the Orient a furious wav is raging. When I enough Innocent men shall have been killed and I enough property shall have been destroyed i I peace will be patched up. Would It not be a I good idea for our Mayor and the Council to try I to come to an understanding before the war lasts I too long? The business of the city should be the I first consideration and not the quarrel among the I city's clerks. I |
