MORMON TRAIL GETS HISTORIC TRAILS CATEGORY Congressman Dan 'Marriott 'Mar-riott introduced a House bill calling for the establishment of a National Historic Trails category with the National Park Trails System, paving the way for the designation of the 1300 -mile Mormon Trail as a Historic Trail. "This new category will allow the protection and marking of the Mormon Trail based on it's Tiistoric' value. Current law only provides for a 'scenic' designation," explained Marriott. "My bill would first set up the new category, then list the Mormon Mor-mon Trail in it. Then it would be appropriately marked from Nauvoo, Illinois Il-linois to Salt Lake,"hesaid. A bill introduced recently recent-ly by Rep. Gunn McKay called call-ed only for the 'historic' designation of the Trail. Marriott said his bill goes a step beyond that and establishes estab-lishes a vehicle for that designation.
