Show ( Hundreds of Indignant Citizens i Besiege the Water Office 1 1 With Complaints. H NO WATER FOR ANY Hf PURPOSE WHATEVER One Man Requested Shutting t Off Water From Hierarch, i Give People Chance. 'According to officials of the water do-ftf do-ftf partmcnt, yesterday was Just about tho H worst, so far as tho water supply Is con- corned. In tho history of tho city. There was such a drain Tuesday night for ' .Eprlnkllng purposes that tho entire dls- H tributlon system was upset and the water H . In tho rcsorvolrs wim almost entirely ex- H hauatcd. , Valves Were Choked. , . By choking vnlves In different parts of ' tho cltv a sufficient supply was kept In tho business section for fire purposes, and H i In consequence people in the resldcnco 1 i section were compelled to exist on a short H I supply, or no water at all. J No Sprinkling Carts Run. The sprinkling carts wore taken off, but this did not give much relief. A further measure of relief, which has heretofore not occurred to tho managers of tho water system, will bo adopted today by using 1 tho canal water for Hushing tho sewers. Pumps at the Sump. i Engineer Bacon and Superintendent Hlnes went out to Emigration canyon yesterday and looked over the situation preparatory to Installing pumps at the sump. It is expected to take a pump from the water" works shop to the sump 1 Friday, and also a gasoline engine. Tho j water from the tunnel will be turned from the sump Into the main shaft temporarily, until tho sump can be cleared of mud and H sediment, when It is hoped to develop an additional supply from that source of probably a million gallons dally. En-glneer En-glneer Bacon hopes to have the pumnd 1 going by Sunday. . . Complaints Were Many. Complaints were frequent, loud and H deep at the water office yesterday. Prom Hl all parts of tho city came complaints of leck of water, oven for cooking purposes. 1 On Seventh East street some residents 1 were without water from I o'clock Tucs- j day afternoon until long after noon yes- H terday. These were caught without preparation and had no water even to make soup for dinner yesterday, let nlonc for bathing and sprinkling purposes. One Telephone Message. One Indignant citizen went to the water 1 office and wanted to organize a mob and 1 hang the C'ty Council for allowing the water supply to get so low Another telephoned as follows: "For God's sake, shut the water off from Joseph F. Smith and Dick Morris long enough for me to get a drink." . . Had "Water to Burn." According to tho calculations at the j water office, scarcely eight million gnl- Ions of water were flowing In the three canyons from which tho city gotp Its supply yesterday. Notwithstanding this alleged condition, some parts of the city had "water to burn." so to speak, and proceeded to use It as though there 1 was a feast Instead of a famine. Consultation Over Situation. A general consultation over the situa-Hon situa-Hon regarding the water extension plane 1 was held at the office of Attorney F. S. Richards yesterday, but this had no ref-crenco ref-crenco to tho present shortage, but rather to plans for disbursing the mll-lion-dollar bond fund. Money for Pumps. The only measure looking to an early increase in the supply of water taken by the administration was the signing by the Mayor of the resolution appropriating 1 51G00 for the installation of pumps in Emi- j gration canyon, and also the $5000 ap- propriatlou for further experimenting witli tunneling and building a cut-off wall. As It Is estimated that even a 1 temporary cut-eff wall will cost $18,000 to 1 $20,000, the inadequacy of this make-shift appropriation is at once apparent. As to Right of Way. i Tlie administration Is just now deeply concerned over tho question of right-of- j I way for the Big Cottonwood conduit. Some of the farmers along the proposed l'oute are not proving as tractable as was i expected, - and are wanting a larger slice of tho $5000 appropriated for that purpose Condemnation Is Proposed. Condemnation suits are now proposed, j A representative of the law department said yesterday that most of the property owners along the route had deeded rights I of way to the city on reasonable terms, H1 I but a few are asking sums out of all j i proportion to the value of. the same. Against tlie latter, he said, condemnation suits will be commenced at once. Under B, the law possession of the land may be j taken by tho city without prior payment or tho giving of a bond. Land Not Injured. The representative of the law depart- mc.nt further said that very little of the land will be injured in any respect by the laying of the conduit. The condb.lt will bo laid, covered up and tho ground leveled off and restored to the same con-H con-H J ditlon as it was before the conduit was i constructed, so that the land may be j , used as before for agricultural purposes. Contractor Is Stopped. Until the right of way question Is sct-tied. sct-tied. Contractor Moran can do little: i work on the conduit. It was his cxpec- i i tation to begin work yesterday, but it may be several days before ho can make ! ' anything like a reasonable beginning. |
