After posting a not-so-impressive 0-6 preseason record, coupled with a region six opening loss to Bountiful, Boun-tiful, the Woods Cross boys basketball basket-ball team was left searching for its elusive first win of the season against Granite Wednesday night. The search, which had been called off seven times before, came to an end around 8:30 p.m., when the scoreboard read: Woods Cross 56, Granite 48. 'It was a long time coming, but we just hung in there," said WX coach Kevin Wilson. "Tonight we learned that we can play to win. I think they came back and played with some heart." Man Cosper led the Cats with 19 points, while Jamie Coombs added 14 and Shawn K earns 10 as Woods - J V, -X m I w- 4 75" II jlC y - Cross improved to 1-1 in region six play. "We don't talk about the preseason anymore. We are 1-1," said Wilson. "I'm real proud of the kids. We played some pretty good defense. Another thing we did really real-ly well was rebounding. We played really well at times and we gutted it out in the fourth quarter. We had more heart. ' ' After trailing 9-8 in the first period, the Wildcats went on a 7-0 run to lead 15-9 early in the second quarter. The surge gave Woods Cross the lead for good. However, the contest remained close throughout the second stanza as the Fightin' Farmers refused to die. In fact, Granite pulled to within one at 19-18 with 3:52 to go. But to the Wildcats' credit, the Farmers could get no closer. A 7-2 run by the 'Cats, all WX points courtesy of Cosper, increased the lead to 26-20 with 1:37 left in the half. Granite narrowed the margin to 26-23 by halftime. In the third quarter, Woods Cross used three treys to keep Granite at a distant e. After the Farmers moved to within two at 29-27, the 'Cats responded with 12-4 run to ice the game. An 5-0 run to open the fourth quarter gave WX its biggest lead at 46-33 with 5:33 remaining in the game. Down the stretch, Coombs nailed nine free throws to secure the victory. Pat McGrath led the Farmers with 17 points. "I think they were flat, but man-to-man defense can make you that way," said Wilson. "Now we can play with a different attitude. We can play to win games." Speaking of which, the Wildcats return to action Friday at home against West. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. |
