Show THE THUNDERBIRD 'Scrooge' comes to town again . Scrooge: The Stingiest Man in Town will be the musical centerpiece for a growing Christmas tradition on campus and in Cedar City. The ageless musical, based on Charles Dickens' novel, A Christmas Carol, starts Dec. 7 and continues through Dec. 12, the final day, including both an 8 p.m. performance and a 2 p.m. matinee. Douglas H. Baker is the play director. Baker directed the Fred Spielman and Janice Torre production last year at SUSC. The mainstage show proved to be so successful that it is being repeated in a freshly designed production that includes preshow music by student Kathy lessop. Ebenezer Scrooge will be played by Micheal Stassinos this year. Julianne Crofts also has a part in the play, but as a different character than she played last year. The opportunity to woik on the show again has given me new insights into the love and tenderness Charles Dickens gave to his story," Baker said. "The Christmas spirit should be with us always, not for just one month every year, but a sharing of ourselves all the time." Two holiday projects have been added to make attendance at the play especially meaningful: Christmas Lane and an opportunity for children to contribute good reusable toys to Tiny Tim's gift box. For the first time this year, one night will be designated as family night. On Dec. 7, admission will be $15 per family. Christmas Lane, which will stretch between the Student Center and Music Building, will be a festively decorated walkway with adorned evergreens. The ornaments on the trees will be made by Iron County elementary school students. The winding walkway will be a glow with lights donated by SUSC faculty, staff and Associated Women. The atmosphere will be, according to plans, filled with Christmas music and the traditional smell of roasting chestnuts and spicy wassail from 7 to 7:40 p.m. on production nights. Choral groups are welcome to add to the holiday spirit, Baker said. They can contact him 0 at to arrange performance times. Christmas Lane is being by the theatredance department and ASSUSC. Toys for Tiny Tim's gift box is being coordinated by ROTC students, who will be dressed as toy soldiers. Children who contribute will receive a candy can and a special button, said Scott Phillips, theatredance publicity coordinator. 586-788- NOVEMBER 30, 1987 FACE 9 PLAY OUR BIG CLASSIC RIZE GIVEAWAY! The Scarlet and Black proved to be the crowd's favorite during its performance as the show band at the Tucson Highland Games at both opening and closing ceremonies. With plum trees as the unlikely backdrop, the 51 member band was led onto the parade grounds by drum majors, Scott Sharp, Chelle Hansen and Dione Ray. According to the Arizona Daily Star, "The crowd was treated to music by a variety of bagpipe and marching bands. A favorite was SUSC Scarlet and Black Ceremonial Band, which received an enthusiastic round of applause as it marched by." Tuesday an autograph party will honor Iris Parker Corry, a Cedar City poet and author of Bread and Milk, a collection of 44 poems. The autograph signing begins at 2 p.m. in the Special Collections Room on the second floor of the Library and last for four hours. Corry's poems portray life in central and southern Utah and many take on a historical view by describing the first mines in the area. According to Diana Graff the event includes light refreshments and copies of Bread and Milk available for purchase. Scarlet and Black, The recently-celebrate- d SUSC's marching band, will hold a symphonic band concert in the Thorley Recital Hall on Wednesday night. Sixty members of the band will perform in a Dec. 2 presentation of such rarely heard marches as John Philip Sousa's Black Horse Troup to more familiar march pieces. Many pieces which they will play Wednesday night were performed at the Highland games festivals. Sunday Mark L. Mecham will direct the annual SUSC Christmas concert featuring the Women's Chorale, Opus VI and the Chorus which begins at 8 p.m. in the Thorley Recital Hall. Soloists for SUSC's Dec. 13 Messiah sing-i- n have been selected. Rehearsals are from 3- - 5 p.m. Dec. 12 at Thorley Recital Hall. -- MONDAY Scarlet and Black was established along the same lines as the British Guard bands. In keeping with tradition, the band is limited in numbers. "Although we have 60 people on our roles, only 48 musicians and three drum majors can participate at any one time," said David Nyman, band master. 721 SNOW TIRES AND CHAINS IN STOCK FOR SAFE WINTER DRIVING!
