A junior, secretarial science major, Gengler is the premier women's runner on the cross country team She wasn't always interested in running and didn't get into running until her sophomore year in high school It was at a meet physical that the cross country coach urged Gengler to give running a try From then on, her swimming career was secondary with running becoming "like an addiction," according to Gengler Along with any addiction comes some form of satisfaction, and Gengler's satisfaction is that she "feels really good about myself after I run " Goals are what we all strive for, and in Gengler's case, her number one goal is to make the 1988 or 1992 Olympic team as a marathon runner Her immediate goals are to make and win nationals as a representative each scored The Gulls pulled out to an early lead and came out on top at the end of the first half 47-3- 4 They maintained their momentum throughout the second half, giving them the victory of 99-7- 3 We just couldn't seem to get going," said Assistant Coach Don Deavila "We had 20 turnovers in the first half and they hurt us severely inside We hit only 37 percent from the field in the first half and usually got one shot each time down the court " LuAnn Weston finished the game with 15 pionts Senior Sheri Davies added 12 points and seven rebounds while Suzanne Pressett and Brenda Acor 9, tourney points for the In Friday night's game the 'Birds defeated Cal State had two players Northridge, 78 67 'The named to the team in Weston and junior Staci Sargent. The championship and consolation games are Saturday at the same times 1 1 Cal-Sta- te goals of SUSC Things haven't been easy for Gengler as she is striving for a mark at the top Asthma plagued her most of her life and during the past four yea's it has been severe Last summer, however, a nasal operation opened things up, so to say, and the asthma problem is now history The ingredients of a good runner according to Gengler are dedication, determination, stamina and some natural ability Geneler, who was named after her dad Jack, comes from a family of runners which probably accounts for her natural ability Grandpa Ivan, who Gengler holds in high regard, was the second best runner on the East Coast in his day Running may be her first love, but Gengler realizes that school and studies have priority She is passing up the indoor track season to improve her grades Her attitude toward school and running can best be exemplified by the saying that is hangirg below her light switch that says, "Be pocitive in running and school." That saying parallels her philosophy about life "Do the best you can, no matter what the out come is You get out what you put into it." With such a positive attitude, nothing but continued success can be in the running for Jackie Gengler Cross country runner Jackie Gengler shares her first love. |
