Show see Showcases Anne of Green Gables I The Grand Theater ii p plays ays host to a musical i classic for the entire family w By Hope V Rowe i r r Staff Writer V I SOUTH CITY Look CITY Look out Shirley Temple here comes Emily Jane Stewart Stewart is currently playing Anne in Anne of Green Gables at the Grand Theater Anne of Green Gables is a witty and heartfelt musical about a loquacious orphan girl with bright red hair hair covered covered with freckles who is accidentally adopted by Matthew and his sister sister sister sis- sis ter Marilla Marina played Neal Barth Earth and Alison W. W Jensen I The siblings want a boy to help with chores Matthew is supposed supposed supposed sup sup- posed to take it easy due to his V recent heart attack What they end up with is an opinionated littie little little lit lit- tle tie girl with a fiery temper But it doesn't take them long to discover discover discover dis dis- dis- dis cover what a wonderful addition Anne is to the family nor does it take the townspeople long to see how clever she is Her playful and outspoken character leads to many amusing situations The script is e extremely funny and If p the actors are fine tine There is a alack alack alack lack of energy in Act I but it picks up nicely by Act 2 Anne and Matthew stole the hearts of the audience from the beginning When Matthew sang Anne of of Green Gables toward the end it V was heart wrenching There were tears flowing throughout the theater The actor who plays Matthew has played many roles previously at atthe atthe atthe the Grand Theater Stewart is a senior at East High School She has preformed leading roles on many stages in Salt Lake She has also recorded a single to be besold besold besold sold in Europe Stewart and Kris Heywood Gilbert have terrific chemistry on onstage stage especially during Act 2 when they sing Ill Show Him The character Rachel Lynde the town snoop was brought to life by Clara Susan Morey Morey was able to capture the character and give it a realistic personality Morey has recently been filmed in two movies She also reads the newspaper over the radio for forthe forthe forthe the blind two to three days each week Susan McMurray Abbey has also directed Oklahoma She has also acted in You Cant Can't Take it With You performed at the Grand Theater last year For the most part the play was enjoyable however be prepared it is two hours long and many people especially children were a little impatient waiting for it to end Anne of Green Gables runs Monday thru Saturday until April 6 2002 at the Salt Lake Community College Grand Theater Ticket prices range from to 1850 with a two- two dollar deduction for matinees Show times are for the evening showing and on Saturdays for the matinee Call for reservations A 0 r 4 J Jr r 41 o V q V S 9 y rf y y i i At ri ff may t ra G Gr r F 4 y r jf Y i Emily Stewart stars in the Salt Lake Community Colleges College's version of Anne of Green The Gables-The Musical Photo by Steve Fidel Fidei |
