Show Volume II , Issue III The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 23 December 1999 50 Years Ago Diets cont. from page 22 Fact: True, simple sugars do not maintain a person’s blood sugar levels as long as protein or fat, which will lead to hunger pains. However, when simple sugars are eaten in combination with protein and fat in a well-balanced diet, these nutrients provide adequate feelings of fullness. Dieticians suggest eating a well-balanced diet, with 55-60 percent of calories coming from carbohydrate, 20 percent coming from protein and 20-25 percent coming from fat. Claim: Sugar is an energy sucker “the anti-nutrient;” it contains no vitamins or minerals. Fact: Neither sugar nor protein, in and of themselves, contain any vitamins or minerals. Vitamins and minerals come from the source of the sugar or protein. For example, an orange contains natural sugars as well as vitamin C and a steak is high in protein and also contains iron. In addition, Dr. Atkins expects a person on his diet to “protect themselves with solid vita-nutrient support” a vitamin product developed and marketed by him. The vitamin supplement is needed because a high protein, low carbohydrate diet omits many foods and is not nutritionally well balanced. In addition, the diet is low in fiber and high in foods containing cholesterol. Such diets have been clearly linked to higher rates of heart disease and colon cancer. In general, when following a high protein diet, the following is true: 1. Fast weight loss is the result of water loss and unhealthy loss of lean body mass (muscle). The body breaks down lean body mass in an effort to provide glucose (or sugar) for the brain. Water is stored with glucose, and glucose has more water per gram than protein does, so if a body has no glucose it will weigh less than a body with appropriate stores of glucose. 2. The diet is lacking in many vitamins and minerals. 3. Quick fixes seldom lead to long-term changes. The diet would be hard to follow long-term based on poor taste and strict “no sugar” orders if the diet is to work correctly. (Dr. Atkins also admits that the lost weight will return if the dieter returns to eating carbohydrates). 4. This diet may be appropriately used for some patients with Type 2 Diabetes and “Syndrome X” to decrease insensitivity to insulin and provide weight loss, but should only be used under doctor and dietitian supervision. Learning to follow a diet with moderate amounts of carbohydrate, protein and fat is an appropriate “healthy life-style change.” While it does not work as fast as the Atkins Diet, when combined with exercise, it has been shown time and time again to be the healthiest and most effective approach to lifelong weight management. There really is no quick fix or “magic” diet. Managing your weight requires hard work and constant vigilance. References: 1. “Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution,” Robert C.
