Show c EDITORIALS This paper is on flla at tne American Minin; Congress. Denver, Colorado. THE GREATEST OF THEM ALL. Bids The Jamestown Fair to Eclipse All Other Continued from the last.) Among these foreign countries that accepted the invitation of President Roosevelt and declared their intention to participate in the celebration of the three hundredth anniversary settlement in of the first English America, are, Great Britain, Germany, Russia, France, Japan, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Sweden and Greece of the eastern continent and Brazil, Argentine, Venzuela, Mexico, Chili, Domingo, Porto Rico, Salvador, Peru, Guatamaula, Mexico, Ecquedor, Costa Rica, and Panama, of the western continent, and, while there are no official figures as to the exact number of foreign war vessels that will participate, it is estimated that there will be at least forty. Uncle Sam will have ten of his best and sea monsters In most formidable Hampton Roads, making a total of at least fifty of the most powerful fighting ships In the wrid, assembled in Hampton Roads, the broadest and perdeepest harbor In the world, and numhaps the only one In which that or ber of vessels could maneuvre safely anchor. The following states have already or provided made appropriations, and funds by special subscription, many of the buildings provided for have been completed or are nearing completion: Connecticut, $25,000; District of Columbia, $25, 0(H); .Delaware, $15,000; Florida. $50,000; Georgia $50000; Il$15,000; Kentucky, linois, $25,000; Louisiana, $15,000; Maine, $40,000; Maryland, $65,000; Michigan, $60,000; Missouri, $60,000; Massachusetts, $50,-00, New Jersey, $75,000; North New York, $150,000; $15,000; North Carolina, $30,000; Ohio, $75,000; $10,000; Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, $50,000; $100000; South Carolina, $20,000; Tennessee, $10,000; Virginia, $300,000; Virginia Da-kota- counties (additional), $150,000; Vermont, $10,000; Wisconsin, $60,000; West Virginia (at least) $15,000; Oregon, Montana, Idaho and Washington (Joint building) $250,000. In fact, almost every state in the Union will be represented at the Jamestown Exposition and the State Buildings will certainly be an interesting and instructive feature. The prevailing style of architecture is colonial, but some of the states will reproduce famous buildings of different types, the purpose being to present the millions of Exposition visitors types of famous homes and halls where great personages dwelt and great events occurred. The States Buildings, like many of the other Exposition edifices, will be permanent, and after the Exopsitlon will be transformed into homes, club houses, hotels and the like. Most of these Interesting historical buildings will be located along Willoughby bouand levard, facing Hampton Roads-from them visitors will be able to' see the ships entering and leaving the s harbor, and also see the naval and nautical contests. Georgia, the empire state of the south, will be well represented at the exposition, and its geological, agricultural, horticultural and educational exhibits will be among the best. Georgia will spend $50,000; on a state The State building and exhibits. of building will be a reproduction Rullocli hall, the birthplace and home of the mother of President Roosevelt, at Rosewall, Georgia. All of the details of the original structure will be preserved, even to the furniture and landscape decorations, and the whole will no doubt attract unusual attention. The great Keystone state will reproduce old Independence hall, which is the pride of Philadelphia, and fondly referred to as the Cradle of Liberty. The original building was erected as a State House for Pennsylvania, in 1741. In it the Continental Congress man-euvre- held its session, Washington was apof the pointed Commander-in-Chle- f American forces, and in it the Declaration of Independence was adopted, and frlm its steps was read to the public. It is also hoped to have the old Liberty Bell, which now reposes In Independence Hall, at the Exposition. Maryland will reproduce the home of Charles Carroll, of Carrollton. Charles Carroll was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and the Carroll family is one of the most noted in Maryland. One of the rooms In the Maryland building will be fashioned after the chamber in the old state house in Annapolis where Washington resigned his commission as Commander-in-Chie- f of the Continental army. The Talmage home, the first Colonial mansion erected in Connecticut, has been selected by that state as a model for its building. Colonel Benja min Talmadge, who erected the mansion, was a staunch patriot, and one of the most valued members of Gen eral Washingtons staff. To him was entrusted the execution of Major Andre who was convicted as a spy and executed at Tappan, N. Y. The original Talmadge mansion stands at Litchfield, Connecticut. The Buckeye state has taken as its model for a building at the e position, "Adena, the first stone house erected west of the Alleghany mountains, For years this building was used as the executive mansion, and is closely identified with the early history of that state. The Massachusetts building is a reallca of the first State House, in which the original constitution of the United States was ratified In 1788, while Little Rhody will represent her first State building. It is an imposing and attractive structure, and occupies one of the most desirable sites on the grounds. As far back as 1756, when the Mother country and France were at war, Rhode Island was the first to supply troops, and also fitted our fifty privateers to prey on the commerce of the French. While Rhode Island was loyal to the colonies during the revolution and furnished some of the best troops, she was the last to ratify the constitution of the United States, because she feared that because of her diminutiveness and peculiar location, she would be destroyed, or, rather, absorbed by her more powerful neighbors. It was- not until 1790, after an amendment to the original constitution had allayed her fears, that she ratified the constitution. Rhode Island also deserves credit for the distinction of being one of the first states to Rnake an appropriation for participation in the Jamestown Exposition, and the first to break ground in the erection of her building. Missouri will have a stately building of large dimensions, built after the colonial style, and that will be in every way a credit to that state, while the four great and growing states of the Pacific northwest, namely: Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana, are arranging to erect a gigantic joint building in the form of a Maltese cross, each state to occupy one section of the cross, $250,000 is to be expended on this building, each state sharing alike in the cost. The material for Its construction Is to be of the native timber of theBe states. A number of other states have selected sites and ylans are now being drawn which will in every way conform to the architecture and historical character of the building now under course of construction. It is now certain that more states will erect buildings and participate in the James town Exposition than have ever done so at any other exposition. Oklahoma, the progressive territory and prospective new state, will parti clpate in the Jamestown Exposition with its usual patriotism and vim. in our nexL) Local & News Items CALIFORNIA MERCUR NOTES.
