Show 1 4 ) WEEKLY REFLEX-OA- NEWS JOURNAL, VIS NORTH DAVIS LEADER, JULY 30, 19.81 Kaysville Chamber: Fun Run A Fun Run is being sponsored by the Kaysville Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with their annual Krazy Days. The run is scheduled for Aug. 1 and is a three mile run beginning at 9 a.m. in the Kaysville City Hall. Tou mam By DAVE WIGHAM Bountiful City can stand up and take a bow for the softball tournament they ran over the 24th weekend. From all indications the players thought it was one of the best run they had been involved in. SURE THERE were some comments for improvement but for a first time effort it was a top flight event. Maxine Harmon should be given a lot of credit for the smooth running affair which ran three days. She spent a lot of time over at the Parks making sure everything was going smoothly. Max was the person that came up with the idea for the tournament in the first place and she deserves much of the credit for the success. SHELL BE the first to admit though that she had help along the way. Neil Jenkins, the superintendant of the Parks and Recreation was also involved in the event. He was there bright and early each day to make sure things were right and if he could help in any way. In between games Neil ran the horseshoe competition at City Park and it too was a success. Much of the praise came toward the scorekeepers of the events. These gals spent many hours watching softball and keeping track of the score both in the book and on the scoreboard. Girls like Jill Avery, Jan Avery, Kym Halbash, Kelly Richards, Angie Harwood, Chris Whetton and Kerry Fenwick should be praised for their work. THE GROUNDS crew did a fine job of keeping the diamond in playing shape. Brad Christiansen, Joey Tibbitts and Gordon Little were the main people involved with this project. The games themselves wer fun to watch with the teams evenly matched in most cases. Many former high school athletes were involved in the event and they showed the crowds that they can still play the game. IN THE Salt Lake tournaments it seems to turn into a home run derby with the biggest teams winning. In Bountiful though it's the base hitting, good snip- - Beauty Salon Off HAIR SPRAY $ 095 8 defensive clubs that came out near the top. All of the team involved like the 400 North Park, expecially the infielders who fell in love with the red clay. Neil Jenkins had the clay brought in a couple of years ago and since then this has been one of the best parks around. Hopefully down the road all the city parks can have this type of surface. Dr. Jerry Wilde, chairman of the event, said there will be 8 URSULA LAST YEAR the home run winner hit 34 home runs in the tournament. The four foot fence at the Complex is 285 feet from home plate. This year they played at the new Taylorsville Complex and the winner had five. Their fence is ten feet high and some 320 feet from home plate. That put the pressure on the big guys to play some defense and try for base hits rather than the long ball. What would have been easy home runs last year turned into long outs this year. SOFTBALL, SPORTS in general, tends to bring out the worst in some people but the sportsmanship at this Bountiful tournament was great. All the teams wanted to win and were gracious in defeat.
