May 5 a meeting will be held in the Monticello Public Library at 2:00 p.m. The Clean Air Act Amendments Am-endments of 1977 require federal land managers to study all national monuments, monu-ments, national preserves, pre-serves, and primitive areas are-as under their jurisdiction for possible redesignation as Class I areas. The recommendations, along with supporting analysis are to be reported to Congress and the affected states by August 8, 1978. There will be close coordination coordi-nation with the state government gov-ernment in developing the recommendations . According to Paul L. Howard, BLM Utah state director, studies will be done on Grand Gulch and Dark Canyon by Utah BLM personnel to determine deter-mine if they should be recommended for redesignation redesig-nation as Class I air quality areas. A similar study will be conducted on the Paria Canyon Primitive Primi-tive Area by Arizona BLM people. These lands are currently designated as Class II areas. People who wish to consult with BLM regarding regard-ing the review should contact Bill Wagner at the BLM Utah State Office, 524-4033, between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m., from May 1 to May 11. The purpose of the meetings is to inform the public of the areas under review, describe the procedure pro-cedure to be used in the review study process and provide the public an opportunity op-portunity to comment on the study. Mr. Howard said, the public is invited to participate partici-pate in this process by submitting written or oral comments at the meetings on the importance of the air quality related values of the areas under review and the appropriateness of Class I redesignation. Written comments may also be sent to the Director, Direc-tor, National Park Service, attention:. 460, U.S. Department De-partment of Interior, Washington, D. C. 20240. The deadline for comments com-ments on the study areas is May 15, 1978. A notice containing more details on the study was published in the Federal Fed-eral Register, April 10. |
